I got this rod & reel combo at a garage sale nearly 12yr's ago, it's become one of my favorite rod & reel combos. The question is how old are they? And who makes the rod? I know the reel is made by Shakespeare obviously. I know the real is a Shakespeare 2711 DB it has leather drag washers. I suspect the rod might be a Abu Garcia, the rod is a 7ft two piece, with metal male & female plugs on each end, and even some of the line guides is quite different on what you might be accustomed on seeing on rods compared today's rods. This rod & reel combo and I have seen some real heavy fishing combat; so any information would be highly appreciated indeed.

what is the foot number on the reel?
(you will have to take it off the rod and on the reel where it sits on the rod)

2711 DB manufactured in 1979. Unless someone changed the butt cap on the rod it is an Abu Garcia. That is the logo used on older Garcia rods. Here is a link to the web page for antique Shakespeare reels and how to determine the year of mfg. http://www.shakespeare-fishing.com/antiques/how.shtml Having grown up in that era, I have fished with lots of similar tackle. Still have several old fiberglass Abu rods.
