Going Bull Red fishing with some buddies in a friends boat. Want to bring my own setup along. I have a Abu 6500 is this a good reel? What would be a good rod, want one that will handle the monsters. Also what line?

That reel should be fine. I use a similar size reel with a 7' MH rod (an older Falcon Lizard Dragger - freshwater bass tackle). I normally just spool up with 20 lb trilene Big game or 20 lb Ande line.

thats a good reel, the same i use. i would use 30-40lb braid. that way u can get close to 300 yds on it. and for the rod. any decent rod will work good for reds.

For my $$, Shakespeare "Ugly Stick" is hard to beat. 6 1/2' or 7' med hvy action. Just my opinion, others will vary.

I caught one not too long ago (44 inches) on a 5500 with 25lb test on a 6ft light rod......it was fun but I got him in.

Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

If you're just chunking meat for bait (not lures) then an Ugly Stick is hard to beat.

I don't throw lures much, and I like the ugly stick or a fiberglass rod, myself.
