Channel Catfish are becoming one of my favorite fish to unexpectedly hook into with a fly rod. They just put up such a great fight. Has anyone caught any cats while fishing for bass, or does anyone chase cats on purpose? Post some pics!

Great looking channel! I got into a mess of them while fishing for bass with my 5 weight one day and they sure are fun. I've never specifically targeted them, but I think I might have to try some time soon.

When I lived in La Vernia I would target them with my 5 wt in Cibelo Creek. I would swing wooly buggers or other streamers along cut out banks or snags in the water and hang on. They aren't shy when they grab the fly and they put up a heck of a fight. Added benefit is they go very well with hush puppies and cole slaw.

Here's a few I caught out there:

FISH ON!!! ummmmm off

Caught this one at the Riverbassin tourney Austin leg. Thought I had one hell of a bass till he started doing the catfish rolls.

It's more than the catfish would do.

I acually target them. Here's a few highlights from over the years. I have a ton more pics of little 10 or 15 inchers but here's a few nice ones.

Al Crise Day 2011. This was on a 4wt fishing for troots on the Paluxy with a size 10 electric blue north fork nymph

This is from my Grandparent's pond, it's my PB. Zeroed a 15lb boga. I guessed it at 20 plus

catching cats is fun to do -

nice fish !

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

they love grasshoppers

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Anyone got one on a hopper pattern? Sounds like a lot of fun.

I was throwing a deerhair popper in some really clear water when a huge channel came up and thought about eating it, but ended up getting spooked.

Catching catfish is one of my favorite aspects of fly fishing.

I caught three today while chasing bluegills. I guess they like the little bugger I tied.

Sweet little bugger. They seem to be about the same size, I bet there was a big school or group of them feeding. Pretty cool. I bet you thought the first one was one hell of a bluegill.

Today from Lake Lavon. Top one was chasing a school of minnows and found my fly, I saw the minnows jump out of the water right before the indicator went under.
