In hot weather and warm lake water temperatures, I put crappie in a layer of ice in a cooler. They clean easy and meat is firm. But I was wondering about shrinkage of length. Today I measured a 13” and 12.5” crappie caught about 10 am and cleaned at 5 pm. The lengths at 5 pm were 12 ¾ and 12.0. It got me thinking that you should only keep 10.5” and longer crappie if icing them down. If a game warden checked you at the ramp, I doubt he would consider shrinkage of length due to being iced down if a crappie came up shorter than 10”.

If we concentrated on the really important stuff in life,
there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

Even better, maybe you could somehow warm up those almost-legal crappie to get that extra 1/4 inch? hmmm

If you have a good live well that is by far the best way as the shrinkage is less if any and the taste of the fish from a good live well vs ice is FAR superior.

Personally I don't keep anything shorter than 10.5" anyway, ice or not.

This is a terrible statement. I actually prefer to cook once frozen fillets over fresh ones personally. I find that they hold together better that way and the taste is the same.
