I have just started to think about selling my boat and getting into a bigger one. In the past couple of days I have noticed that there seems to be a lot of '08 and newer boats for sale with Yamaha motors. I have never owned one or road in a boat powered by one. I am just wondering if the boats for sale, powered by Yamaha, are because of problems and the motor not holding up or are they just a good or better than a Merc? I guess it comes down to; are they out there for sale because of problems or popularity?

Because everyone changed over to the Yamaha SHO engines and is selling their old HPDI's.

Seriously, they are both great engines. And both will have problems as do all outboard motors. Ford or Chevy. Take your pick.

This will turn into a Ford Vs Chevy debate....Both have their issues and both are well built for sure.

The SHO is better on fuel then the Opti according to a tech I spoke to. I test drove one during the college championship a few weeks ago. The Sho is super quiet and ran decent.

It's going to be about who prefers what...

Ok. So to make this easier I should not let the brand of motor decide wether or not I buy a particular boat. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything out there about the yamaha That I needed to know before buying a boat.

Thanks.

I have had both as well as OMC's. The Merc and the Yamaha are good products. The OMC's I have had did give me problems. I currently run a 2008 Yamaha 250 HPDI. 210 hours as of this weekend and no issues at all so far. The Mercs seem to be faster than my Yamaha but this could be subjective too. Look at the overall deal and the warranty differences then make your best decision. Good Luck!

Yamis are Great Engines. I think the reason you are seeing the 08,09, and 2010 HPDIs 2 strokes on the Market is the Yami guys want to upgrade to the new 4 stroke SHO.

I have ran nothing but 2 stroke yamis on my boats for 13 years, and my next engine will be the SHO. Hopefully next year god willing.

I have had 3 yammys including the current SHO. I have spent exactly ZERO hours in the shop for warranty or any other problems. I can't say that about the Merc's I have owned.

I have had Mercurys on the last 4 boats I have had including the current 300XS and have had no problems and have spent no time in the shop except for scheduled maintenance.

The only thing I know is that the opti gets better fuel mileage than the hpdi.
