My family knew of my interest and somebody tried to purchase something for me, but didn't look over what they bought very well and don't have the receipt. So I'm wondering, are the tools in a lure making kit going to be the same for fly tying? I don't know anything about this yet as I haven't started. I know the hooks that came with it have the weighted heads, so I'm assuming I can just get unweighted hooks to use in the little clamp vise instead?

It's a Lefty Kreh kit, they had fishing jig kits and fly tying kits that looked almost identical. I can only find the fly tying kit http://www.eyespick.com/fly-rod/lefty-kreh-fly-tying-kit.jpg which may give somebody an idea of it if they've seen it before. I think it was basically the same, just had different hooks and probably slightly different materials to build them with.

http://www.basspro.com/White-River-Fly-Shop-Fly-Tying-Kit-Jig-Tying/product/42545/-941240 Ok, I believe that's the exact one I have. Should give you a better idea of what tools come in it. It says "fly tying", but if you look at the hooks, which are the same ones I have in my kit, they're all weighted. Also, the eye is on the side of the hook, not on the top. I thought generally most flies used unweighted hooks with the eye on the top?

**edit** Ok, I was right, the hooks at least, aren't for fly fishing. It says "learn how to tie your favorite jig flies". So, on this note, can I just get the unweighted hooks you can find at Walmart or anywhere else and use those hooks for my flies instead of the weighted ones?

**edit again**

Looks like these would have been the better choice. I don't know if Bass Pro will take my item back without a receipt though. Looks like the tools are all the same. Just the material it comes with is different. I'm guessing I could use the flourescent stuff instead of natural feathers and things that come in the other 2 kits to make flies right? My first few are probably going to suck anyway, so why not? I can always get more stuff later I guess right

AAPFC,
I looked at the pic in the first link. I see a vice, bobbin holder scissors and bodkin. That'll get you started. The only other tool I can think of that you will need would be a whip finisher. Or learn to tie one by hand. It looks like you could even use a lot of of the materials. The smallest hooks in the kit MIGHT be usable with a higher weight fly setup.
As for hooks at Walmart, size 6 Aberdeen (earthworm hooks)is the smallest my local stores carry. Usable, but still rather large as fly fishing hooks go. I use them to tie large streamers for bass, catfish and crappie.
Good luck with your endeavors, and post some pics once you get started tying.

If you have not opened the package there is a good chance they will let you exchange for the trout or bass kit. If the box is already open then use what you've got and get some new hooks. Or practice on the jigs and gift them to someone using conventional gear.

What species are you planning to tie for?
Sunfish (Bass, bream)
Trout
Saltwater
Other (Carp, Gar, catfish)

Some of Walmart's hooks are suitable to fly tying for certain of the above categories (Saltwater and Sunfish)but you will need to know what to look for. You will have a better chance of finding suitable hooks at Bass Pro or at a fly shop but probably at a higher price.
http://www.captainhookswarehouse.com/ is a good place to get hooks cheaply and of decent quality especially Mustad 3366's and Eagle Claw 410's and 413's.

If you are tying for Trout you will probably want to restrict your hook sizes to 10 - 16 to begin with until you can tie with some consistency.

If you are tying for Sunfish go with 2 to 12 with your species crossover flies being in the 6 to 12 range.

http://flyanglersonline.com/flytying/beginners/ is a great way to learn. Ask a lot of questions and tie several of each pattern you try, they get better with practice.

That kit has all the basic tools and materials. Follow the instructions and tie up some jigs for pracitce. Then look up fly recipes online and buy the right materials and hooks.

I started out with a BPS bass kit. It came with a Lefty Kreh and Clouser dvd. Worth the money. It will let you know if that is what you want to do, before you lay down a bunch of dough.

Like wise, I started wit the BPS kit. The Dallas flyfishing club ties flies on Saturaday and Grapevine BPS, call and confirm and then just go down and play with there stuff. FYI, its a great relaxing hobby, but it is cheaper to buy the flies. smile
