While catfishign at my local ditch i hooked 2 freshwater soft shelled turtles. They swalled the hook to the esophagus and i had to cut the line.
Is there a way i can remove the hook without being snapped at? Or prevent this from happening?
Was Using dough bait.

I dont mind CATCHING them, i just dont wanna kill any of them. I afriad that the hooks ive been using will harm them mortally.
Will circle hooks prevent this? If so please tell me how to effectively catch fish on them because im not working them verey well. No im not jerking the rod to set the circles.

Wh2004 That totally just goes against what i posted. The whole ppint of me starting this topic is to find ways to avoid injuring bystanders, such as soft shelled turtles, when catfishing.
I dont like killing wildlife and dont ever feel good about it. Unless theyre insects..

Catfishbubba, when you caught them on circles, were the hooksin the esophagus? If so howd you get them out?
If not, was it a challenge grtting the hook out of the turtle's mouth?
Howd everythign go and were you injured?

Every time I got em with a circle they didnt swallow it they were hooked in the neck or in the foot and it wasnt to hard to get out and I wasnt hurt in anyway now the turtle didnt like the 22 mag very much but he tasted awsome. Now you might wana go ur in hook size but I have caught them on #10 hooks so it may not help much depends on the size of the turtles in your area.
