Typically i have seen them caused by turtles crawling across the top of the vegetation, but any critter can cause them

whats the cheapest way to kill back most of this grass? Neighbor, I'm afraid you just opened up a big can of worms! The reason I say that is I've got some ponds infested with vegetation. Great cover for bass, but makes it near impossible to fish or swim. No easy fix. Welcome to my nightmare. First find out exactly what it is. Different plants require different treatments. Hard to tell from the picture but it looks like eurasian watermilfoil. If it is there are 3 options starting with least expensive.None of them are cheap, which is why I still got the problem. (I AM cheap) 1. Biological approach - grass carp and fertilizer. Eurasian watermilfoil requires clear water. Fertilizing with a high phosphorous fertilizer at the right time of year with the right amounts creates an algae bloom that murkys up the water blocking the sunlight. About one gallon of liquid fertilizer per acre per foot of water clarity. Also add baby triploid grass carp to eat the milfoil. It's not one of their favorite foods but they'll probably eat it if there's not much else vegetation. 2. Mechanical approach- There are machines you can hire by the hour to come out and rake it up. Expensive and the milfoil will grow back worse in time. You can get a rake, I've tried that, I don't recommend it. 3. Liquid vegetation control- the brand that comes to mind is Sonar. Never tried it, but I've heard is if you just show the label to the milfoil it'll start dying left and right. VERY EXPENSIVE. Also if you use too much at once, the dying vegetation will use up the dissolved oxygen in the water and cause a massive fish kill. Have fun!

Thanks road trip!
I started with a home made rake today..seems to work good enough. just labor intensive. What a waste of excellent hydrilla..lol
Everything I took out today will be dried up and dead tommorow.
thanks for the info.
