I have always heard that you can use small threads of nylon rope or something as such to make gar lures, various people have told me that gar get their teeth caught in these lures; but I have never seen one. Please, I would like to know on where that I can get plans on how to make one of these lures and how to use them. Any information would be highly appreciated.

There is plenty of info on the net. Basically you take a piece 1/4" or 1/2" diameter nylon rope tie a knot 4 to 6 inches from the end. Cut the rope above the knot. Untwist and/or comb out the fibers from the knot to the end. The knot is the head of the lure. The nylon fibers will tangle in the teeth. Presentation is the key. "Swim" the lure by the gar without spooking it. When and if the Gar takes the lure give it some line and a little time to get tangled. Do not try to "set" the lure. The gar should tangle itself trying to rid itself of the lure. I have only done this with white nylon rope but have thought about trying colors. Its been years since I have done and was able to catch spotted river gar around 3 to 4 feet long. Have fun getting your rope lure back.

We were on Buchanan a few weeks ago and a huge school of gar came in around us. I cut about 6" of my anchor rope and unraveled it and hooked it on my rattle trap. Ended up catching about a 5ft gar and lost another. Pretty fun.
