Need a mechanic recommendation to work on older mercury outboard. I have a 1985 75hp, 4 cyl, that may need a stator. The compression is good, the carbs removed, cleaned, and adjusted, replaced the impeller, and brand new gas. Engine runs fine under idle, but not under load. A forum member mentioned the stator and it does look like the two yellow wires going to the switch from the stator are shot. I just don't know if the wires can be spliced or a new stator needs to be installed. Either way, I need someone to take a look and make repairs. I've got a pic of the switch area of the motor if someone wants a quick look. If it's not the stator, need to get whatever repaired so I can get the grandkids on the water.

No you cannot splice the stator wires. Lots of boat shops in FTW

Awhile back someone sent me a PM with the name of an independent mechanic, that worked on the older Mercury engines. I was hoping someone would send me that kind of information. I appreciate the response on the wire splicing, but was hoping for a more specific recommendation than "boat shops in FTW." That doesn't help me much. Would prefer to use a forum member who is fairly priced, dependable and good at what he does.

Larry's Marine in Plano. Does good work, gets it out fast, and a very fair price. Don't know the number but you can look it up.

Thanks Gary. I'm starting to get a few recommendations. Has anyone heard from Spanky lately?
