I and a friend of mine who have fished for alligator gar together several times over the past couple of years got together last week for some rod and reel alligator gar action. We were in an area that I was previously unfamiliar with but that didn�t stop me from putting us on the fish.
After setting up our spread it was not long before we got a run. This fish ran about 60 yards before we could get to the rod and set the hook. I and those with me always try to hook alligator gar in the mouth, this time our attempt was unsuccessful. However, as we were attending to this rod we saw a big fish roll with a piece of bait in its mouth, while we were distracted this fish had picked up a bait and we had no idea which rod since we were so far from them. Quickly we ran back to our other rods to find two of them with less line on them than when we had walked away. The first rod we picked up was tangled with another rod�s line which had moved a long distance from where it started. We didn�t think a fish was on anymore since the lines were laying slack, so we untangled them. Little did we know the truth, but soon it became obvious. Just after untangling the lines one of them started moving upstream, my buddy reeled up the slack and set the hook hard, fish on! Drag began screaming from the reel, the fish jumped and for the first time we realized this was a monster! It took about fifteen minutes to get this fish landed, what a rush! This fish is my buddy�s new personal best and measured 6�10� long with a 34.5� girth. Weight 135-155 pounds. I should also add that this fish was hooked in the mouth, and will bear nothing but a memory of our encounter!
