OK with air box removed run and watch in each carb for dripping. Easy for the floats to be out of adjustment on these motors. Better yet I would replace all of the floats. Run all idle air screws in and back out to 5&1/2 turns. Fine tune in lake. Just remember this motor does`nt idle on all cylinders after warm-up. Have had problems with the timming base getting a loose pickup causing intermitent power problems. Make shure the enrichment valve is not leaking by or red handle is turned to correct position. Remove the small fuel lines their and pump the bulb. If fuel comes out at the small hoses, valve diaphram is bad or valve is turned wrong. All spark-plugs will show to be normally wet. Too much smoke is not normal, sign of getting too much fuel.

purdy, the red handle you are talking about is on the oiler correct? which way is it supposed to point. Mine has 3 settings on it. 1) straight to back appearing to be closed, 2) 45 degrees, and 3) straight down.

Yes the red valve is supposed to be straight down or inline with the but have seen them leak by internally causing a rich condition.

Well finally got a chance to mess with boat a little took it out over a week ago and it still smoked alot and wouldn't get over 5000rpm so left out for work for a week and today lowered motor at home and not only did water run out but also oil and it wasn't gear oil from lower unit but black 2 cycle oil I had filled oil tank on last trip and today only had. Half a tank. So today vro oil side was done away with. Went to lake and boat got 5350rpm but not 5800 doing better though. I checked plugs I believe all the oil may have hurt them and also I notced they aren't ql77jc4 but just l77jc4 could that make a difference they only have an hour on them they came from napa. Thanks,Tony

Need more help from ya. Still couldn't get wot so I bypassed the fuel pump and tried an electric pump. It went to 5400 rpm and started surging bad rpms dropped to 4000-4500 and went from 60mph to 51 mph. It seems to only be electrical left to look at so where would be the best place to start and what tests to use. I do know all 6 cylinders will jump 7/16" with a good blue spark.

I would pull the flywheel. Check the stator for weeping (looks like melting wax), check the timer base for loose pickup or damage that looks like something went trough it. While your there clean and check the wire plug connectors for the power pack and regulator.

Ok stuck in south texas for a week at work and have done some research and would like your input. Boat has been over oiling and surging bad tried a electric pump instead of manual pump and seems to surge worse and all fuel lines replaced a year ago. Could this possibly be a stuck anti syphon valve causing me all of these problems? If so I will be pulling tank wednesday morning and checking need to replace sending unit anyhow.

Wow all is well now 10 minutes of work and cost nothing to fix. A freakin anti siphon valve was my culprit the whole time. Turned 5850 rpm and 70 .3 mph now without a problem. Thanks for all of your ideas.

etex i have a 97 venom 200 and everytime i have had issues with it it has been in the fuel delivery system....either not wanting to hit top end or dying on take off before you dig deep into it get a small gas tank like 2.5 or 5 gal and hook it up in place of your normal tank as close to the motor as possible eliminate all lines and filters and tank in the boat fill it with fresh good gas too it has saved me alot of time in the past
