I was just curious what some guys are using out there? I have a Hummingbird 997si and I really have a hard time trying to identify fish. I was thinking of Lowrance but would like to hear thoughts.

I use a Lowrance 522c. Nothing real fancy and it works ok with me.

I don't have either but from looking at pics on the internet I can see how the biggest screen would be necessary to interpret what in the heck a person was looking at.

I contemplated this decision for almost a year. I finally decided on Lowrance. I still have a lot to learn, but the new 4.0 upgrade helps simplify matters. I think either way is fine, just don't let the guy outfish you because he can see what's there and you're still guessing and relying on past experience in areas. It's definitely an advantage in having the latest technologies.

I went with Lowrance as well. I think either way it just depend on time with it on the water. It's taken me some time but I have gotten more comfortable with it. Still learning.....

If you can identify structure and cover you'll be all right. I don't think either one has a huge advantage in iding fish. Fish are so small relative to the size in what you're seeing with SI on either brand most of the time it's nothing more than specs.

I went with Jason Hoffman to Fork a couple of weeks ago, and before we even put our lines in the water, he knew if it was biggens or small ones down there, or even sand bass. Every time he was right. He uses H'bird, but he taught me what to look for w/ my Lowrance, too. There is a difference in knowing what to look for.

My nephew has HB 997 and 797. My brother has HDS7. They all work well. Got to BBC.com and read the info under Hummingbird. It tells how to set up and show fish.

I appreciate the info. I went out on Waco today and i played with the 997. Once I found a drop off or long points I switched to the screen that is colored. I did find bait fish but not sure if I was looking at big fish under them. I think I need scuba gear so I know what I am looking at.
