Just returned from fishing five straight days at Falcon. Once again, the lake did not disappoint. My good friend Charlie Haralson had some time off between jobs. Charlie has fished the lake twice for one day each trip since January of this year, so I figured it would take some time to figure out the fish. NOT! Our results were as follows:
June 6 - 47 fish, best 5 = 32 pounds June 7 - 91 fish, best 5 = 38 pounds June 8 - 45 fish, best 5 = 28 pounds June 9 - 118 fish in 5 hours with 41.50 pounds on our best five. My best fish Thursday weighed 9.88. Our fish came from water as shallow as 2 feet and as deep as 27. The overwhelming majority were in 5-12' on rock in brush on points. Charlie kept the boat out deep as far off the fish as possible. Lures were 3/4 brush and football jigs with Rage craw trailers, mag flukes, senkos, shallow running square bills and DD22 and LC D20's. Most of the bigger fish came on the crank. Chartreuse/Blue was the best color in the Sq. bill and the D20 for me. Also MS Crack. I threw them on 20# Seguar InvizX and most bites came after snaking the bait through submerged brush tops and then reeling it down on the backside as soon as you cleared the brush. Some also came with the bill digging rock. Best fluke colors were green pumpkin/majic in the dirtier water or in low-light conditions and watermelon/red and watermelon/majic in bright or clear water situations. Jigs either imitated crawfish or bream. Best color was blk/brn/amber with Big Tex and Falcon Craw trailers and Watermelon/chartreuse with a Summer Craw trailer. All bottom bouncers were fished on 25lb InvizX.
June10 - 37 fish, best 5 = 39.38 pounds with a 9.89 for my best fish. I had the pleasure of fishing with Jim Edwards on Friday. We went flipping bushes for some big fish. We used 9/16 and 3/4oz jigs that Jim makes himself. These were brush jigs with a badazz hook that really did the job. Best color for me again was a blk/brn/amber with the Big Tex and Falcon Craw trailers. Jim was fishing a similar color jig with the Falcon Craw. My 9.89 and all of our other big fish came on the jig, except for one 8 lber I caught on the MS Crack D20. Jim also had a few on the crank and I had about 6 on the green pumpkin fluke. All flukes throughout the trip had chartreuse dipped tails.
Jim is a big fish specialist and I would highly recommend you call him if you're considering a guide trip at Falcon. I had the 9.89, two 8's a 7, a 6.5 and 6 lber in about three hours. He's as easy going a gentleman as you will ever meet and always seems to have a smile on his face. I had to scold him several times during the day to pick up a rod, lol! Mr. Edward's can be reached at 361-816-1316. Jim also makes the JoBaby Spinnerbaits and jigs. They are first-rate quality.
In closing, we could not get on a strong deep bite, although we did check a bunch off stuff and caught a few here and there. The deep bite was pretty good on our 118 fish day. But "deep" was 17-22, so that's relative. The fish are shallow chasing around the vast schools of tiny threadfin shad. They'll run them up onto the points, humps and ridges then the melee begins. I guess it's kind of like deer and corn. They love it but get little nutritive value out of it for energy expended. All of the big females that were shallow were long and skinny from running bait. The deeper fish were in better shape. Thanks also to my friends Dan Halen and Ken Rawlinson for joining me in the boat during one of my best vacations ever!
P.S.- We fished both sides of the lake from the dam to way up river. The best fishing was mid-lake in Mexico. I won't tell you that fishing over there is perfectly safe, but it sure was for us. Not one problem, lots of friendly netters and the Mexican Marines patrolling their side by air and ground. I will say that fishing down there is as safe right now as I have seen it, but you have to judge for yourself. At any rate, a man could fish in Texas for a month and never cover all the good places. Plenty of Law enforcement on our side and BP boats running the international line constantly.
The lake is fishing better than it ever has, according to all the guides and locals. I believe them!

Hey man, thanks for the great post. You probably need an arm splint after all those fish. I'm going with Charlie 6/16-17--pretty excited. How was the wind on those days?---I think later this week it may blow so I was wondering if you were able to do that good on some breezy days.

Awesome info and greatly appreciated. Sounds like you had an awesome time. I'm going for the first time ever on July 4th weekend on a four day trip. Can't wait to get there and see what this is all about?

Dr, it blew 10-20 every day. Higher on Thursday and Friday, but we were still able to fish. Temps were 105-107 every day in Laredo, a little less on the water. The breeze was actually welcome. I can't stress enough good sunscreen (36 minimum), hat, SPF clothing, sunglasses and HYDRATION! I wore SPF 75 and 85 the last two days and still got plenty of sun.

Good report Fouz.. So you're the reason that Edwards never delivered my jigs!
I'm headed out there now to get me some!

Fouz - Like I said. I have had many better catching days. But those 2 days with Charlie and yourself were probably the most fun two days of fishing in my life. Damn I wish I could be out there everyday.

Congrats! I miss fishing with ol "Charlie Murphy!". Those big fish are up shallow. Find a small pocket on a point and get ready to get your arm twisted!
