I am getting a baitcast reel and rod to catch large sharks surf fishing. Please give suggest to what I should get. I need a reel that can hold 500+ yrds of line.

www.tx-sharfishing.com Those guys will set you up. Think Penn 113 HL's and Penn slammer rods paired with 50 lb. mono. Check out that website, and you will learn A LOT. Great guys too.

You're not going to need a reel that can hold 500+ yards of line unless you're kayaking baits out. Do you have a 4wd truck? Where are you going to fish? Lot's of variables to suggest the right equipment.

Ok...so you think the Daiwa EXC6500T Exceler Heavy Action Spinning Reel would be a good setup with the 12 foot beef stick surf fishing rod? Also...Is this reel big enough for handling large sharks and rays while surf fishing? Last year I had 6 line breaks on my 80 pd braid...I dont want to lose the big ones this year...This reel should do the job...do you agree?

were you using a sizable mono or flouro leader, like 20+ feet worth, and an 18 inch steel hooklink? this may be the reason for breaks in the braid. A strong sharks tail will shread your braid...

I was using a 5 foot steel leader...but not a mono leader afterwards.
