im putting together a rig for shark fishing and was wondering if anyone uses, or has used powerpro as their main line? if so, what do you think? i used to use powerpro on all my carp gear but have since switched to cabelas ripcord braid, although i do like the powerpro. im just not sure how well it does in saltwater?

I have heard of guys using 150lb braid for surf fishing for sharks.

Several of my offshore bottom rigs are spooled with 85lb Power Pro. All of my inshore rigs are spooled with 20lb Power Pro. No issues at all.

I had to learn the hard way to keep my hand away from the line on the offshore reels when a big fish is on a run. When the line is peeling off it can burn the carp out of ya.

same here, at first i didnt believe that braid would cut into your finger on a hard enough cast, it willl......

im glad to hear that you havent had any problems with the power pro. im pretty sure thats what im going for.

I've been using 40lb Royal Carp braid with a top shot of 30lb mono on my kayak rod (set up for sharks). I would go heavier from the beach, but have had no problem with this combination when going for Texas sleigh rides.

Depending on whether you're fishing from the beach or not will determine whether you want to use braid as your main line or as backing. If you're fishing from the beach you'll want some type of thick mono. When you paddle baits out from the beach your line is constantly rubbing over the sand bars and sand is pretty much like sand paper rubbing over your line for hours at a time. All my Shark rigs have the same test of Power Pro that the reel is weighted for and then a top shot of 100yds-300yds depending on the reel.

I am a South African and I love fishing for sharks off rocks and from the beaches. I have been made aware of the fact that your saltwater fishing laws are different from ours but I think some of the questions Chrismunn is relevant.

Firstly, I catch my sharks using a Shimano Exage1468 graphite rod and my reel is a Shimano Trinidad50. My Trinidad50 is spooled with 800metres of 50lb PowerPro as backing, 250m of 48lb extremely abrasion resistant monofilament as top shot. Bigger and thicker line is an over kill. Don't use braid only, you need monofilament for both casting and serving as a shock absorber. Braid only and you will get cut off on the nearest boulder in the water.

it all depend on where are you going to be fishing from. if you are fishing from beach and gonna yak the bait out 300yd plus you will need braid backing and top it off with mono because when the braid rub against the sand it will be damaged. now if you are going to be fishing from boat or kayak you can use straight mono.
