You must have a lifevest and signaling device (whistle, horn, etc) while kayaking. You only have to wear a lifevest if it's an inflatable, others you don't have to.

I need to get a more comfortable PDF. Mine is very hot and bulky. But I still wear it even though. I'm thinking about getting a inflatable. But if I do, I'll loose all the pockets I keep all my fishing stuff.
And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Matthew 4:19

You don't have to wear it, just keep on in the craft. Same goes in a kayak or inflatable.
But again, it would be a good idea to use it.

PFD's have only one design fault. In order to properly perform its function, It must be worn.

If you don't wear it, it can't work. It is your second most important purchase after the yak itself..... a good paddle comes in third.
Get the most comfortable PFD you can find, preferably one designed for yakkers.
