Ok, this is my first time trying something like this. We have lots of deer corn because where we are camped, my husband feeds the deer here. I read the corn needs to be cooked...?? It is hard like when I buy beans, shouldn't I soak them first? How long should I cook the corn? Please help me here fish !!

Ok, preparing deer corn for carp fishing, or Maize as we call it, includes the following

1. put in a large pot. I usually make 5 or 6lbs at a time but you can do more

2. fill with water

3. boil for 30-45 minutes depending on how much your making

4. let the maize soak in the water you boiled it in for 24 hours or more

5. flavor with whatever you want, many grocery store flavors work great

6. Fish it, we use a hair rig for maize

Hope this helps!

I would soak it first, then boil it. The flavor soaks into the corn better as it cools from the boil.

Soak for 24 hours, boil for 30-45 minutes (or until you can put a needle through it

PB Common Carp....... 38 lbs
PB Mirror Carp........12 lbs 8 oz
PB SM Buffalo........ 53 lbs
PB Grasser........... 48 lbs 4 oz
PB Blue cat.......... 17 lbs (caught on maize)

When you say flavor it, do you mean the liquid flavors like vanilla because I don't have any right now. Could I use like onion powder or garlic powder? Or should I go to the store and get some liquid? If so, do you have a preference?

Unflavored is fine. Its the natural sugars from fermentation that the fish like. Flavors just catch fisherman....

Fished from 9:30 to almost 1:00 this afternoon and had alot of fun with the carp. I was impressed on how well the corn stayed on the 'hair'...even after the fish was caught, I was able to fish with the same baited hair/hook. Used onion powder to flavor the corn. Only had the mental capabilities to take one photo of a common carp I caught, though.!!?? Have to learn all over again how to post a photo, but I'm sure everyone here knows what a common carp looks like..UGH! fish

fishlady..The next time you go camping, just run by HEB or WalMart & buy a few cans of CHEAP canned corn. Works good, no preperation, just remember a can opener.

The main reason we use maize is it stays on the hook better, you can't hair rig canned corn like you can maize, and maize is a ton more durable.

FL glad the maize worked! I really like cherry and banana flavored maize but i've used about everything. Maize just plain catches fish! Also a tip- I usually fish maize when I'm using whole kernel corn or maize in my method. Just get the carp in the area eating something similar to the hookbait.

Another reason to use deer corn: $7.00 for 40 pounds, versus about a dollar a pound for (cheap!) sweetcorn...

Gotcha, thanks! I appreciate learning new fishing tactics. I'll be having fun here until Sunday when we head to Lake Conroe to fish for about 5 weeks. That'll be interesting I'll bet.

After work I ran by the feed store, and the once inexpensive particles I'd use freely have definitely gone up a bit. One bag of maize and a bag of Milo came to $24! This could be due to a dry growing season or the price of petrol needed to transport it. Regardless I am definitely missing the days of a $4 bag of maize. Not that particles have gotten too expensive to consider buying; however when you intend on getting 50-100lbs of bait out on your first night it is a bit much to just be literally tossing in the water.

I found 4 bucks for 50lbs a bag at Bass Pro like a month ago. I stocked up, I think I got a few bags.
