Yellow Magic vs. Pop-R: It's all about confidence. The one you keep in the water the most is the one that catches the most fish! I have trouble believing that a hungry bass trying to ambush a bait fish differentiates one over the other.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

my alewife one is going on 15 yrs old, no paint left and many feathers added but its logged in over a thousand fish.

I don't think I have ever been outfished by a pop-r, but I have been killed on size pop-rs. I can have 15 fish...the other guy have 4..and all 4 are bigger than my 15. I don't throw the magnum yellow magic, only the 1/4oz smaller size.

Mustad/KVD triple grips...size 3 or 4..next time u get a chance, throw out the yellow magic, then throw out another similar lure...note, not only the action, but especially how the ym sits in the water...that is the biggest key

well what about the excaliber zell pop? Its all about the almighty dollar my friend. One of Zell's biggest sponsors now is Excalibur Bait company. I highly suspect the YM's are made in someone's kitchen near Kobe Japan...

Their marketing is working great!  Those cheap hooks may not be good enough to land a 5 lb. Bass but they sure can land a fisherman.

I've never caught a fish on a top water. I've tried Heddon torpedo's, zara spooks, frogs, pop r's, bill dance top waters, buzz baits, lucky 13's, and god knows what else.
Maybe I should try a yellow magic next and add that to my failed list.

Maybe I should try a yellow magic next and add that to my failed list. Next cloudy/overcast day that u get a chance to fish, throw a topwater near some grass and end that nasty string!

The Yellow Magic is a great lure, no doubt. However it still can not compare to the original Heddon Chugger. I add a feathered tail to the chugger and coat it wih glitter nail polish. Change the hook to KVD with a split ring and you have the best topwater bait ever made, PERIOD.

Has something to do with the profile and the way it splashes the water in look and sound I guess. I don't own any YM's but have some zell pops and pop r's, and the zell pops do catch more way more fish for whatever reason. I've heard some guys say ricos are the deal, the differences are very subtle but thats what makes a difference to a bass.

I usually have them custom painted but most factory colors work also. Shad or white for open water. Perch, frog or black around cover.
