Okay, here's the worm box. This is what I'm best at. I learned to bass fish with plastic worms.


Here is the spinner bait box. Also buzz baits, and bass jigs.


This is my small jig box. I hesitate to call them "Crappie jigs" because I catch more bass on them than I do crappie. You'll notice that I save my used plastic worms, and use them as jig bodies. Also in there are some different jig bodies. The dark green/black ones on the right, second from the bottom are basically large tadpoles, that I use on the football jig heads, and sometimes on spinnerbaits.

This little guy has turned out to be one of my favorites. It's called a "Pencil popper". It tears 'em up! Kind of a pain in the [censored] to fish, because the line will often get tangled up on the front hook, and kill the action, but it gets enough results to make it worth the hassle.


Now, here's a WTF?. If anyone knows what this one is called, let me know so I can do some research on it. It's definitely a deep diver. I call it the "Chrome Turd" for now.

Oh, I guess I could post this in this topic. I just went to walmart to get my fishing license today, and noticed a display of $1 soft baits, spinners, hooks, etc. Does anyone have experience with these? I was thinking about starting out on some of these and build up from there.

That's actually the best place to start. Grab some football jig heads off of that display as well. Look over along the bottom shelf of the rack with the wormage, there'll be some cheap bags of rubber worms. Get a bag of watermellon, a bag of motor oil, and something in red. Scroll up and look at my worm box. I suggest Texas rigging to start, and drop shotting. Learn the improved Cinch knot as well.

As far as the rod and reel go if you're fishing for bass and catfish you'll want at least a medium WEIGHT rod. A bunch of those combos they sell at sporting goods stores sell are flimsy as they can be. Don't know if that's what you have or not though. If I were to build a tournament bass box from the ground up on a budget, here is what would be in it: watermelon red ring fry worms, black worms, pumpkin/chartreuse worms, white and chartreuse spinnerbaits, lavender/white, chartreuse/teal, real shad, and white crankbaits of varying sizes and diving depths, baby bass pattern zara spooks, pearl and real shad flukes, a couple topwater frogs, some watermelon/red zoom brush hogs. That's just me.

I don't know the weight of my rod/reel but it feels decent. The way I look at it is I can upgrade after I have a better idea of what I'm doing and can make better upgrade choices based on past experiences/knowledge. Not to mention it was free....
I went to wally-world yesterday and got a few lures and small tackle box. I didn't get a lot, but got a pop r, a jitterbug, spinner and a few other things but can't remember. My rod came with some worms and hooks.
Has anyone tried round harmless hooks? I saw them flipping thru the latest Texas monthly and they seem interesting. Are the sizes similar to a regular hook?

I've only been BB/LMB fishing about six years. So my memory is fresh about "starting out."

The three best tads of advice I can offer is:

1.Hook-up with an experienced fisherman (or maybe a fishing club). Watch/ask/learn.

2.Read a lot. These forums alone offer tons of guidance. Read/ask/learn (like you have here).

3.FISH! Try/fail/learn. Success will follow.

In my opinion, equipment isn't near as important as the respectful desire to learn when you're starting out.

You should really think about changing out the 2 pc. Rod. You can get a decent one at walmart. Lighting rod 1 or the such. The sensitivity is just so much better with a 1pc.

Yeah, I'm already feeling the itch for a new rod/reel, but will use what i have for now... besides a 1 piece won't fit easily in my mazda 3. Maybe with the back seat down... hmmm maybe I can go that route after all when I upgrade.
