I'm a pretty lucky guy. My girlfriend is studying abroad this summer in Costa Rica, and her parents decided they want to take me along to go see her at the end of June. Her dad knows how much I love to bass fish so he wants to go deep sea fishing, so I was going to see if you guys had any recommendations or atleast what you look for in an off shore outfit. Thanks and Gig Em'

I went to Playa de Coco in Guanacaste about 5 years ago. The roosterfish in my signature is from there. The choices were either ponga boats or big big boats that targetted mainly billfish.
I chose the ponga boat after I watch the guides the night before. He dropped off the customers and catch at the shore, drove out to his buoy and tied off. Then he dove in and never resurfaced until he was near the beach. Looked like he had been doing it for a long time.
We caught bonita, to use as bait, and the lure was a 1" piece of a drinking straw. We caught 3 roosters, a few amberjacks, and everyone onboard caught a wahoo.
If you get seasick, the ponga boats are pretty rough.
Take the zipline tour, but I was not impressed with the volcano hike.

there is a lake-- arenal up above The town of Canas and around Tilaran, there is a bass lodge on the south or east end by the dam, arenal lodge or something like that. they have john boats and you will catch guapote, sort of a bass but with teeth. top water... small rapalas and bait. arenal observatory lodge is the name, from the dining room you can see the volcano spit fire at night it is a neat area lots of eco trails and widelife to see. I have been there many times catching guapote although I mostly fish blue water out of tamarindo some 2.5 hrs drive from there. I have caught guapote up to about 6 lbs although they ate known to go to nine.

I was in Guanacaste 4 weeks ago - fished with teh Papagayo Sport Fishing group and went out on teh La Chila G boat - took a all day trip with just two of us. Weather had been calm every day but the day of the trip it was a rougher water. The boat picked us up at our resort which was one of the reasons we chose the charter. They fished hard the first half of the trip and seemed to lose momentum as the trip drew no fish. Crew said they had caught several dorado the day before. Other boats claimed a slow day. We caught one nice sail in the afternoon which saved the trip for us. The boat broke down on teh way back not too far from the resort - they dispatched another boat to pick us up and take us in. I would consider the charter group again if I went back.
Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he has to buy rods, aluminum reels, monofilament lines, nets, tackle boxes, lures, spinners, worm rigs, slip sinkers, offset hooks, gore-tex hats, polarized sunglasses, fish finders, depth sounders, radar, boats, trailers, global positioning systems, coolers, six packs...

I stayed at Playa Chonchal back in November. My wife and I chartered a boat and went out to (I think) Catalina Island. We caught black tuna and spanish mackeral. We did half a day, and were really pleased. Area is very nice. We plan to go back soon.

Capt. Warren, Maybe you can help me out. My wife decided this weekend she didn't want to do a europe vacation this year and go back to CR this year. Any way we spent a few days in Tamarindo 10 years ago and I went on a charter and caught sail and tunas. We are going to go back there and probably stay again at Suizo. I was wanting to catch a rooster fish and maybe something else. Let me know what else you fish for besides the offshore fish and when in either Aug. Sept. Oct would be best. Also has anything changed in Tamarindo? We are also thinking about doing a snorkel trip. Thanks for the info.
