I agree with the heavy weight in deep water. Typically I use 1/4 to a half in less than 10-15 feet, and go to 3/4 or 1 in water over 15. Have never thought about the heavy weight being an attractor as suggested, that's a good idea.
It's kind of my go to bait/rig when fish move deeper this time of year.

Bumping stuff as you drag it on or across a road bed is a good technique. Sometimes I give the rig a quick,short snap as I bump into something on a road and that will trigger a bite most of the time.
