Went fishing on the Nueces river at a friends ranch this past weekend. Was using some brand new lures (three different mini-rattle traps, a H2O jointed 3 1/2" Sunfish, and a H2O Sexy Shad) I hooked up a few times but lost several fish when they threw the hook. I would have them on the line for 5-10 seconds before this would happen. I checked the hooks and they all seemed sharp. Any ideas what was happening?
Thanks,
Steve

I like the h20 traps I really encourage you to get a softer tip medium action is fine 6'6 Is fine as well just get that style rod and make sure it has some back bone the soft tip will help out 25% more with your hook ups this away the fish can really inhale the bait I hope this helps

hmmmm. Where at on the Nueces roughly? We have a place along there as well. Just north of Bluntzer(sp?)

I've never chased bass in there before. We catch a bunch of cats and gar on trot lines.

Sorry forgot about your original question. I have found the hooks on those lures to be less than impressive. I don't really play with H20s much anymore, but when I do, I change the hooks out before they hit the water.

What line and rod are you using with them? Were they hooked inside the mouth or outside? (wasn't sure if you could tell)

You can try and bend the hooks slightly to one direction. If you have ever seen the Excalibur Rotating hooks it's similar to that. Just bend them sideways slightly so they don't line up with the shank. Works great!
Here is a site that shows them from the top view. Just do the same to your hooks on the lures.

I was bank fishing on the river near La Pryor. I couldn't tell how they were hooked (inside or outside the mouth). Most seem to throw the hook around 20' from where I was standing but after they had fought for a few seconds. I was just reeling at a steady pace after setting the hook, keeping pressure on the line. Of course if they were taking line (drag set fairly light)I'd wait to crank again until after they finished their run. I was using 15lb braid with 10lb floro leaders on Shimano 750 spinning reels on 6'6" ultra light rods (had three of these setups rigged to save time). The few fish I managed to get in were pretty small 14"-16". Of course all were caught-released. I'm thinking I'll buy some new treble hooks (suggestions on size/brand?)and bend the points out as suggested.

Alright, we are on the south side of mathis....

I really like the mustad KVD triple grips. They have a short shank so that you can go up one size on the hook and they won't hook one another. The gammy round bends are good too. I also like the owner stingers. Choose your poison!

Could you see the ones that got off and tell they were bass? Are there gar and/or stripers there?

Thanks for the different suggestions on hooks That will help narrow down my choices.

There are some gar there but never have caught one. Two of the fish that got off I saw. Both were bass.

If you are losing fish possibly from fish just swiping the baits I would stick with round bend hooks. Those mustad kvd and gama ewg have the tips turned in. At least put a round bend on the front hook.

I thought it sounded a lot like gar bites but that's out if you saw them. Usually hook up on gar and they make a good run then pull off.

they could just be slapping at it and getting barely hooked outside of the mouth
