Hi folks, I just had my 94 115 Johnson re built (re bored cylinders, new pistons, rings, etc..). It has an oil injection system (I think called a VRO?). At any rate, I was told to run the oil a lot richer and don't go crazy with the speed and rpm's until about 20 hours or so.

Having said that, since the oil injection tank already has oil in it (and will pump accordingly), what do I do now? Mix more oil in along with the gas in the tank or do I pre mix it in a gasoline can and then pour in the tank? Also, what should the ration be as far as mixture for this break in period?

I have also been told that these Johnson/Evinrude oil injection systems are notrious for screwing up. Have any of you all just by passed the vro system and just started mixing your gas and oil first and just pour it in the tank and not worry about it? From what I was told, one of the piston rings came off and just tore up alot of shite... What would cause this? The stupid ethynol they put in gas these days? I just know that I spent over 2 gran to have this fixed and I don't want it happening again..

Yes, just add the right amount of oil straight to the gas tank for the break in period. Do not try and make any adjustments to the amount mixed by the premixer in the engine, you may never get it back where it belongs .

get rid of the vro and premix at 50:1
for now on the break in use a qt of oil to 20 gals of gas for a premix on top of the vro.
the extra oil will help it to run cooler too.

Does 20 hours sound a bit much for the break in period?

Thanks so much for the help

Did tha rebuild come with any kind of warrenty? If it did ya might wanna get HIS break in specifics in writing and follow 'em to a T. He needs ta give tha procedure he wants ta follow anyway. Thats just a given on a rebuild, warrenty or not......JMO

10 hours is more normal. You put oil in the gas 50-1.

Yeah> The rebuilder should have given you written instructions as to how he wants the motor break-in procedure done. As for me; Add one pint of oil to 6 gallons of fuel, along with Marine Stabil, and continue to use the VRO (automatic oiling) system during the first 10 hours.
