My parents came up and stayed at my house in College Station this weekend so that we could go to my cousin's HS graduation in Brenham Saturday.

My dad and I snuck off yesterday morning and ran down to Somerville to play in the wind. My dad use to fish quite a bit, but has been working his but off for the last few years so that we could live in Port A, hunt, fish, plus now 2 kids in College. This has left us little time to fish together.

We got a little bit of a late start after getting home late the night before, but we made it to the lake in time for a little frog action. My dad was kicking my but! He had about a 5 lber come up and SMASH his frog and dang near ripped the rod out his hand. He was having a blast!

Once the bite died down, we went out and threw rigs, we weren't catching big fish, but he was sure kicking my but on numbers! He thought it was great since he hadn't bass fished in probably 15-20 years. He will give Bill Dance a run for his money on hook sets though! One time, he set the hook and the reel popped out of the reel seat. This is a rod that I use all the time lol. We get the reel put back in nice and tight and look up to see his line about 20 yds from where he set the hook. Surprised that the fish was still on there, he cranks it in. It was the biggest crappie that I have ever seen! I've never caught a crappie dragging a rig, so that was another one he had on me.

Bite slowed down, and we moved to a deep area to continue dragging. We hadn't gotten a bite in a bit, then I felt a thump and the fight was on. I thought I had a good one to have against my dad, but it never jumped. Then I bring up about a 3.5 ft gar. My dad thought it was hilarious! Not only was he out fishing me, but I was catching trash fish!

We finished up the day with a little more pad fishing and the aggressive strikes that kept us going.

We didn't catch many big fish, but we had a good time. It was nice to be able to take my dad fishing. Now that I don't live at home, it doesn't happen as much. It's nice to be able to return the favor for all those years that he took me fishing when I was younger.

Hope we have many more fishing trips to come in the future!

Gone Shank'n. I know how you feel. My dad retired last year and moved home to Winters Texas. Just last year he was diagnosed with cancer, Watching him slow down is what's killing me, But it hasn't slowed down his fishing. I try to go down there once a month and take him to his favorite lake OH Ivie. He always catches all the fish. I mostly just sit there and take it all in.We fish from the bank but thats just fine with him. It's those memories that I am making that I look forward to.. Keep fishin

yup its like they say doesn't matter how old dad gets he can still kick your bass! Any time any place just bring it!

Politicians, baseball players, high-powered corporate CEO's they all seem to eventually let us down. Nature, however, does not. Look to her for inspiration and you will learn the secrets to living a good life. The most Important lesson it would seem is to make sure you spend as much time fishing as anything else.

I miss fishing with my Dad who passed away about 10 years ago. My Mother used to say he was more than half fish :-) I try hard but I don't have the same nose for it that he did. We had a lot of great trips together to Lake Texoma for stripers.

What kind of "frog" were you throwing for the bass? It sounds like it was early morning and evening for the lilly pad action?

Thanks for your note.

Yes, early pad action. Well they were blurping it midday, but wouldn't take it. He was throwing an H20 frog and kicking my spro frog's but!
