Put "new to me" Optimax on water and when trying to back off trailer, reverse acted like neutral. Tried forward, same behavior. Shift control feels strange (no apparent tension when shifting). Feels like something may be disconnected in the shifter. Any tips?
Thanks...

Broken Cable not moving shift linkage? Take the cowling off and check.

I had a similar thing happen along time ago. Turned out to be that 1 of the cables came off at the shifter by the driver seat. It could be that a piece has broken there or maybe just came loose. I would check there first..

Just worked on a 4000 control that did this. Someone greased the indent pin causing it to slide into wrong place. When this happens the shift part will not attivate. Pull the cowling and see if the shift linkage is moving when control is moved.

Thanks all. Ranger Ski diagnosed it - was pressing the "Advanced Throttle Only" button when shifting. Been a few years since my Skeeter/Yamaha - must be early Alzheimers kicking in. Thanks again.
