There are a few places around Sabine Pass if that's your area.

I take my kids crabbin at Chocolate Bayou Boatramp. Its on FM 2004. It's a FREE public boatramp.HAve never left there without a cooler of legal blue crab! We use the crab rings and throw lines but always catch more on the throw lines. Loads of fun and a great family event.
Just a thought.... Justice

Didnt do any crabbing recently but I did see some fishermen hooked some blue crabs on their fishing lines. It should be good enough to catch some crabs now.

I'm new to this. What are the best methods for catching blue crabs? And do they have to be larger than 5 inches across to keep?

I personally have not done blue crab fishing in this region but have heard that the limit of 5" across is for commercial crabbers and that there is no limit for recreational crabbers. That is what i have heard but i am not certain. Also a very good method to catching them is hanging chicken necks in crab traps. It used to be very productive when i was crabbing back home on the Chesapeake Bay.Good Luck.

Not true. TPWD Regs I made some simple traps out of pvc coated chicken wire that work pretty well. They have to be 100 yds. apart unless they are tied to a pier or dock though.

Use chicken the cheapest you can find , leave bone in , tie real well to strong string , with some weight attatched about 2 -4 ounces , figure how deep water is to cut you're string for each line . Hint hard to find now days , but putting chicken pieces in nylon hose helped chicken not to get tore up by crabs .

A good long handle crab net is another must if you are using string, they are pretty cheap, got mine for much less than 6 bucks.
Around here you can get a crabing net (looks like a little pier net) for about 3 bucks, tie a line to it, tie the chicken to the bottom of the net, toss in (depending where you are you might have to weight the bottom) check it periodically and take out the crabs that are in it.

Crabbing was pretty good at Roseland Park over in Baytown yesterday, lots of legal ones being pulled out.
Heck I caught and gave away at least 10 legal ones on my cut bait lines.
Its also a good place for kids, there are covered picnic tables by the seawall, and when they get bored there is a playground and free water / spray park thing there.

Chicken necks are the best in my humble opinion. The loose neck meat dangles freely, attracting crabs and giving the something sturday to hold onto. We used to go with heavy bank sinkers on heavy Dacron, with the neck tied on just above the weight, when crabbing around jetty rocks and rock groins (great spots if the water is not too rough ... either way, be VERY careful when walking algae-covered granite). Option two ... same bait, same weight, but instead, placed inside of an inexpensive circular crab net (you can find them almost everywhere on the coast, even some convenience stores). Again, this depends on a light tidal flow and calm water ... but some of the best crabbing I have ever enjoyed came from the surf. Buy some "shepherd's hooks" from the Wal-Mart garden area, set them deep into the sand (the "gut" cut out between the first and seoond sand bars) and tie the bank sinker/bait combo at the end of a heavy Dacron line tied off to the crook of the shepherd's hook. Note: Do NOT retain any "sponge crabs," females carrying an orange mass of eggs within the flap on the lower side of their bodies. And measure the capapace tips to make sure the crabs are big enough to legally retain. Lastly, if you are in the surf, put a half a (broken) crab body on a circle hook, cast it out with a surf rod and hold on. Big redfish and especially black drum LOVE fresh crab. Good luck, be safe, and have fun. Boz ...

You can also go to San Jacinto Battleground (by the Battleship Texas) for crabbing.

There are a few places around Sabine Pass if that's your area. My step dad crabs commercialy around sabine pass. He runs lines, not traps. He use to have a hole around sabine pass, he could fill up four ice chest in a couple of hours. All 20" to 28" from end of claw to claw. I dont know why he measures them that way? Talk about nice crabs. Last time they dregged the ship channel, they silted his crabbing hole and its hasnt been the same.
