Ok, so I finally saved up enough to purchase my first SI unit today. I read a while back that it was a good idea to purchase a standard through the hull transducer and a y cable so that you can pick up depths at high speeds. Is there any cons to this setup? Is the down imaging or side imaging impacted in any way?

Also, I am looking to add a SI transducer to the trolling motor so I can use it upfront. Anyone know if a non SI unit(older HB) can be hooked up to the SI transducer? The bases are the same, just curios if anyone has tried this.

Also, if you have any other suggestions for a SI newbie please share.

That is the best way too set it up and there are no cons. The Y Cable and shoot thru hul puck will not affect DI/SI

I am not sure about the SI puck working with a non SI unit. I would call Humminbird Tuesday and ask.

You can use the SI transducers on some of the units, for instance if I cant get 2 x 898's then I will get one and an 858. I will then have a SI ducer upfront so I can interchange the 858 and 898, the 858 just wont be able to produce SI, but can use the same transducer. I am not sure though which units this would work with on the 798. I would assume any of them as it would just be using the 2d info from the ducer.

Installing the second 2D only transducer on high speed boats allows you to get all speed 2D readings and then mount the SI transducer for protection and get SI and DI at off plane speeds.

You can hook any Humminbird unit to the transducer it will only power the crystals it is capable to operating. For Example a 2D only unit will only power the 2D crystals of the transducer. I know several people that do this so they can use the SI unit where they want it when they want it. 700 series makes it easy to do with the quick release system Humminbird uses.

Is this the best position, keep in mind I've ordered a shoot through hull transducer so SI and DI are my main concerns.

2. If I'm getting the second should this go higher on the transom?

I would go higher if you have clear view to both sides and going to add second shoot thru transducer. This will protect the transducer better. Might need to trim motor but the expensive transducer is protected.
