... because tournament anglers kill three times as many fish as recreational fishermen who keep fish to eat.
What?

It was part of the story that was already linked above.
The problem was immediately apparent, when the biologists had a hard time catching 800 fish to tag. They kept catching fish that had already been tagged. They say thats a clear sign the lake just doesnt have many big fish because so many tournaments are held there, and because tournament anglers kill three times as many fish as recreational fishermen who keep fish to eat.

That is an opinion of the writer and not facts that you can check. The tone of the article is anti tournament and simply refers to TP&W. Normally TP&W does studies that they make avao;able to the public and usally have press releases pertaining to lakes on their website. I have always said that TP&W know what is best for our lakes and they know a lot more than an average guy like me so until I see something from them or a credible source I will keep on fishing tournnaments.

I don't fish tournaments but I understand how important they are to bass fishing. Without them guys like me wouldn't know how to fish or where to fish all these baits that we have today. Tournaments are the tip of the spear in bass fishing.
I just thought that the number was little high, but I am no biologist.

I don't buy that. Even if tournament anglers caught 3 times as many fish as recreation anglers and 1/3 died it would be equal to recreation anglers keeping fish. That's hypothetical but even at that I don't believe the death rate is even that high with tournament anglers. People should be careful with what they say. Its going to give tournament anglers an even worse name.
First people complain about keeping fish and then they scream catch and release. Wow

never had a fish die in a tournament Just because you don't see them die immediately doesn't mean they aren't dying later on. Death is caused by stress which is related to things like high temps and low oxygen levels in the livewell which may take several days to actually kill them.

I can believe there are 3 times as many bass killed by tournament anglers than by people eating them. Tournament anglers catch wwwaaaaayyyyy more than people catching them for food.

This is a topic that will start a whole lot of fights. The avg tourny angler just does not want to hear it though the evidence is right in our faces all the time and just plain common sense. Trust me though, you do not want to even argue this point around here or to the avg tourny angler because they will get very upset and the mudslinging will begin.
