Sadly this has been going on at choke for probably close to a yeasr now. I live outside Three Rivers near the lodge. Know our game wardens well, its gonna be hard for them to catch these guys. Hope they do it though. I myself fish the lake 2-3 days a week and never have any problems with the gators.

I too have spent a lot of time in the marshes of Louisiana, and I've never seen a gator longer than ~13-14 feet in the wild. Seen some that size in Florida, as well.
The supposed world record gator was killed by E.L. McIllheney on Avery Island, Louisiana. The unoffical length was 17'9" but was never certified, as McIllheney used his rifle to measure the gator.
I've seen two very big gators at Choke Canyon including the one mentioned above in Oppossum. I'd say that one is 13-14 feet but it is much broader than most gators that size. As for age, their avg. lifespan is 50 years. There have been a couple kept in captivity that have lived to around 75.

I want to see some pictures of 18 foot alligators I am from south lousiana and have never seen one that big 12-13 foot is very big. Not saying it isn't possible, but would love to see the pictures. I also hope they find the people responsible. Same here. Growing up in Florida, and seeing thousands of Gators the biggest I've seen is maybe 14'. So i would really like to see an 18'er. As said above, I'm not saying there aren't gators that big, but if there are please share the pictures.

No gators are 18 feet long.... 14 would be a monster If there was a dead 18 footer there would be pics and news stories everywhere. Color me skeptical... That being said to kill one for kicks and leave it, of any size is terrible.

Most people that fish choke canyon on a regular basis have seen the 2 big gators that go close to 18 ft. YOu can ask one of the game wardens as well. Now, I dont think anyone has put a tape measure on them but we have all measured them along side our boats and they are very close to 18 ft. There are a couple more that are 14 fters easy.
Yes, an 18 ft gator is crazy, and is as big as they get. That is why it is sad to hear that one was shot. I asked the game warden if they were going to drag it in and he said "No Way, it is way too big to drag in!" I thought that was a little strange but whatever.
A few yrs ago they also showed this big gator on a bass fishing show, and mentioned it being close to 18 ft. Dont quote me but I think it was Mark Zona's show.
Anyways, many choke canyon regulars have seen these big gators and the reason they get so big at choke is because they get the chance to live without being shot before full growth. There is also lots of wild pigs to eat.
There are big ones all over the lake but the two big ones live in 3 fingers and 4 fingers area. The 4 fingers one loves the old cow pond that is way back in 4 fingers that fisherman can only cross in to when the lake is above full capacity.
There is also a big one that lives by the shoreline right accross from callihan and another that lives just down from Mason point. They are about 14 ft or so.
There have got to be some choke regulars around here with some pics of the big ones so everyone can see just how big they can get!

I believe there are some gators at Choke that are more than 14' long, and very thick. I'm talking Kirstie, or Oprah at their biggest - times 3!!! I would estimate their weight to be over 1000 lbs. (the gators, not the ladies!) I've got some pictures, but don't know how to post them.

I don't care how big....14'-18' that's a big gator. Sad to hear. They should just be left alone. +1 Exactly...they are big, I don't think he meant that they were record-size, or anything...pretty pathetic act on someone's part....
