May not be new to any of you but I have a 13 foot fiber glass crappie pole (very flexible). Anyways, I tie a fly on the end of the line and just flip that sucker all around and tear up the perch. If they aren't seeming too interested in my fly I just add a pink crappie nibblet to the fly. They just can't resist it. And when you get a big one it makes for a really fun fight. I have also had 3 bass now over the last month come up and eat my perch as it was fighting about and actually ended up catching one of them (a 3.5 pounder). Had one huge bass get hooked and I faught her for a minute or so before she finally took me around a limb and that was all she wrote. I was laughing my head off the whole time thinking I was going to have to mount this thing if I ever caught it on that tiny little hook. Boy, I'm glad I didn't. Have you seen how much it cost to mount a really big bass?

Sounds like something I'll have to try out. I have like 5 flies I got with a fly fishing starter kit that I still have yet to use.

Seems that you can tie a fly on a cane pole and work it in places. I may just have to try it myself. Does sound like a good way to entice the Sunnies. However It would be very hard to beat my ultra light. Nice report thanks for sharing.

I've never tried using flies - but good to know you can use them on something other than a fly rod... I haven't learned how to work one of those yet. :p
Everyone has to believe in something - I believe I'll go fishing!

This is basically what I am doing. Just not the running water or really nice equipment. In fact the flies I have used are super small cheap things you can get at a Walmart or something. Have not found the need to get all fancy. I have had very little trouble catching alot of fish this way.

Yeah, those rods are expensive. I've been looking for a cheaper alternative that is close. I like the idea of travelling light. My ultralight spinning outfit travels pretty light, but I was thinking of something even smaller.

That is a great way to fish. I bought a couple of those telescoping cane poles at Academy for $1.88 and it has been the most productive 4 bucks I've spent. I'm with y'all as far as keeping it simple and cheap. They scope down to about 3 feet and can be stored anywhere. My 9 year old daughter loves to use them too. She looks funny carrying around that 15 ft pole, but she has become a pro at flipping that thing out there. I just tie some heavy duty braid to the tip and then tie on a mono or flouro leader. You can tie on flies like you do, fish with or without a bobber and use it to work little jigs and spoons. Plus you can use it to reach in bushes and trees where conventional tackle won't reach.
