On the lake early. Scouted some shoreline areas with the ultralight looking for bream. Casting artificials until I got a hit, then I'd throw worms at em. Caught good numbers. Probably about 30 bream in about 2 hours of fishing for them, kept 10 that were like the picture below. Caught one shellcracker, but only 8 inches....I had my "Sun" card with me just in case smile From 10 till noon, I fished the discharge area in 181 cove and put 15 cats in the cooler. Normally a Cally limit of cats..25...will almost fill my 60 qt cooler. Today, the cats were to the top of the cooler at #15. 8 of them were 3 pound channels. Rest were 2's. The biggest channels I've caught on Cally by far. It was every cast when I left. All on DK's original. Went to the wall after that. No signs of reds at all. Tons of shad....very relaxed shad. Also tried to find some of Efeaster and USMCguys bream at the wall. I couldn't figure them out. Tried shallow and deep and all inbetween. Finished up at the reed beds to the left of the boat ramp. Found a bunch of bream about 15 yards off the reeds in about 6-10 feet of water. Also caught a chunky little largemouth. Around the reed beds I couldn't get the bream to hit worms on a slip(float) rig, but they would hammer a black 1/16oz jighead with worm on it. Just casting and retrieving. I left at 3.....the heat was too much. I drank two gallons of water out there today. But there was no wind, so that was the reason I went out anyways. Here are a few pics.

Fun on ultralight

Sounds like a great day at Calaveras. Those cats look good and so do the perch. Too bad the reds weren't moving. Were other fisherman catching reds while you were there?

Nobody catching while I was there. Couple guys were running baloons. I threw rattle traps, gulp swimming mullet, spoons, storm swimbaits. Nothing.

Great report Kyle! Those are some great fish. The wall can be tricky for those gills until you get used to it and it has been a little slow lately. Like you said in your report, 6 to 10 feet seems to be the ticket.

Nice day! I'm looking forward to getting out on that lake in a watercraft of some sort. Looks like you were in a canoe? Did you row around to all those spots or did you motor?

Those are some big gills! Awesome job, I've been wanting to fish Calaveras but never really get a chance to make it out that way.

Very nice report and pics Kyle! cheers Glad to see there are still a few bass in that lake. Hopefully those big bluegills will be plentiful in that lake for years to come!

Unfortunately, yes I have to paddle to all those spots. It's a good workout and I always sleep great that night. It's worth it though. It allows me to get away to the less fished bank areas on the other side of the lake. I've been paddling a canoe 16 years now as my primary fishing watercraft, so I'm pretty comfortable with paddling long distances.
