My sonar quickly stops being able to read the depth soon after i get on plane. My boat's max speed is about 32 mph and after about 20 mph it starts to blink, and wont read the depth. I figured that this was normal when on plan as the tranducer may not be fully touching the water at all times.

This weekend a co-worker of mine took me out fishing on his boat which goes about 55-60 mph and at those speeds, his sonar still worked. Why would his work at higher speeds and mine wont?

He said that my transducer might have got tilted up but it never is.

Transducer location and installation.

Where do you have yours mounted? Can you post picture?

How is important...where you mount your transducer makes all the difference.

I dont have the ability to post a pic but mine was mounted by the factory and it sets on the bottom of the transom. I have a 2009 Tracker Pro Team 170 TX

I will have to look and see if it is located on one of the strakes. Hopefully they wouldnt do that from the factory.

I know your hull design well and that particular one does present mounting problems to the novice installer. Unfortunately, Tracker installs transducers "Willy Nilly" on their new boats without regard for the equipment the new owner may prefer or will later choose, usually necessitating ongoing screw holes for the proverbial hunt of a better location.

I have two transom mounted transducers on my Lowe tahiti 224. Sonar reads great when going under 5 mph. I go faster and the screen looks dark. Sometimes going about 15mph it reads pretty good. Should it try to lower the tranducers? If so by how much? I have them set exactly like the lowrance book shows they should be.

The Lowrance mounting instructions, as well as the instructions of all other manufacturers of transducers, relegate mounting to only what is possible with the brackets provided. You will find an encaptioned diagram on our ""Rules" page how a famous name manufacturer teaches transducer installation. Basic mounting rules apply to ALL boats. Mounting as instructed places the transducer much too closely to the boat in a "trough" and below the bottom of the boat, hence where the majority of problems occur. SternMate causes your transducer to take advantage of the naturally rising displaced slipstream of water created by your boat by moving it aft and up where it belongs. We have all the confidence and respect for Lowrance, Hummingbird, Garmin and many others in the quality of their electronics. We do, however; properly mount what they build best and help you preserve the integrity of your boat. You'll find the answers on our website. There is a tremendous amount of information there and more to come. The "rules have changed" and so have the choices.

Do you have a guarantee that if I install your system that my sonar will read at any speed that my boat goes?

Look at the Humminbird Installation Instructions and Help Guide for Transom Mounted Transducer...when installed correctly you will get readings at speed if in unturbulated water. Sonar cannot shoot thru air or turbulated water. A factory bracket when installed correctly will work at speed or you can use an accessory like mentioned to reduce having to drill additional holes while trying to find clean water for the transducer to shoot and receive the sonar sound waves.

I looked at the install instructions and I have mine like shown. My transducer is about 1/2 way above and 1/2 way below the bottom of the boat. Should I move it up or down to test? Is the unturbulated water usually higher or lower than the bottom of the boat?

Some aluminum boats have a weld where the bottom meets the transom and it protrudes below the plane of the bottom and causes turbulence. I've seen this problem solved several times by lowering the transducer as long as it's not behind a strake.

I know the feeling. Mine does still work, just not all the time. The problem that I am having is once I sit the boat back down it still just blinks and will not recover. I have to turn the power off and then back on and all is fine. I have a friend that has the exact same problem. He has a HB 597 HD DI. I have the 570 DI. Oh well, I lover everything else so far.

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

So this weld at the bottom of the transom is what is keeping my factory installed transducer form not being in contact with the water and causing a "no read" at planing speeds?

The transducer may be contacting the water but the weld may be causing bubbles or turbulence. Lowering the transducer may get it under the turbulence. A pic would help.
