so i just got into the yak game. i have a 10 ft pelican 100dx angler sot. i think i am a little to big for it as i am 6'2, 250lbs. i think a 12ft would be sufficient enough. anyone have any ideas that wont break the bank? if i can sell my bass buster for what i am asking i will have about $300-$400 i could prolly spend a little more than that but would like to stay close. i know academy has an ocean yak for about 450.

Lifetime, pelican, Perception, Ocean Kayak, and Ascend all offer something in your budget.

Lifetime, pelican, Perception, Ocean Kayak, and Ascend all offer something in your budget. If you're looking for new, the Perception Pescador 12 or the Bass Pro Ascend 12 offer the best bang for the buck. Of course, those do run around $500. I would recommend that you wait until you can comfortably afford a kayak in the $500 range. You could go with either of the two I mention earlier or grab yourself a nice used kayak.

If you keep an eye on Craigslist, kayaks are posted all the time. Good ones seem to get snapped up quick. But I definitely recommend the Pescador. I'm 6' and 200ish and it's a very comfortable ride for me. Weight capacity of 350, leaves you plenty room for gear. Plus it comes in any color you like as long as its red.

dangolephil, the Pescador is the same as the pre-2009 model Wilderness System Tarpon 120. They have the same parent company, so when Wilderness Systems did a redesign for their Tarpon series in 2009 they continued to produce the old Tarpon 120 under the Perception label.
So you can also paddle that kayak if one becomes available for you to see if you like it.

dangolephil, I am 6'3" and 245lbs. I would recommend the Ocean Scrambler XT. Great stability for the big man. Storage is excellent too.

Yeah, the Pescador and the Scrambler XT are both great kayaks. Good choices.

I just ordered a Redfish 12 to replace my Pelican. I've heard good things about them, and they seem like great kayaks. There are good videos on youtube of people having problems trying to flip them.
