Had a good weekend on the Brazos but need help with identifying the first fish pic. The fishing was good and caught plenty of Largemouth, sunfish, spotted, and 1 1# shad, and 1 catfish on a fly. Used topwaters, clousers, and streamers but for great topwater fishing, it still needs to warm up a bit IMO. Caught my first fish on a home made fly. cheers

A very nice Largemouth/Spotted that we caught.(help identify)

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Draw a line from the rear edge of the critters eye straight down. If there is any mouth / jaw parts in this area, she's a larger

which is what you are properly holding

I'll write my reply in english.
It appears to be a spotted bass.

i agree with jerry, that it may be a spotted bass. if it is, it is a giant!!! may be cross bred, as a lot of fish are in the brazos. should have pulled a scale from it and sent it to TP&WD. anyway, nice bass for sure!!

Looks more like a regular largemouth to me as there is not the typical "splotching" up higher on teh back like you see in spotteds alot.

It was exhausted and after taking some quick pics, we were just in such a hurry to put it back that we didn't take measurements. It's easily over 4 lbs and could exceed 5 since it was so long. The girth was not tremendous but she was not skinny either.

We have a picture sent to a state biologist so we will see. If it's a spotted, the state freshwater record is somewhere in the high 2 lbs to low 3 lbs. The lake record is around 5.6 lbs.

It's more than the catfish would do.

A black bass is a black bass and thats that.

Hey Jerry and Russell, are you two still catching them blue fin on the Nolan, or are you two just sticking now with the amber jack, and all those tarpon ? Just asking.

Thanks Stephen. Yes we were just excited to catch it and put it back alive. It wasn't until later that we started questioning it. Being a river bass, we couldn't ask for much more. The biologist said his analysis could not be definitive without seeing the fish personally, which is reasonable.

I donno. The mouth margin might extend back behind the eye and be a Black Bass, but the markings on the side tell me it's spotted bass and not a Black Bass. I'd vote for a Spotted cross, like Russell mentioned.

I knew I'd seen that Big Brazos Bass before. My brother caught him a while back. Over by that big tree, right J S ?

this bad boy is my bro's personal best, not counting that perch he caught, and then hit me hard in the face with, back in 1966.
