I'm a bass fisherman who also loves to catch crappie with my kiddo's.

I hate the smell and slime that crappie leave in my livewell. I take a cooler with a 10lb bag of ice to put the crappie in. After we're done fishing I'll buy another bag of ice and sorta sandwich the crappie between the ice. This keeps my livewell from stinking and I'll usually clean the fish the next day/evening. A frozen fish doesn't move or bleed. It makes cleaning them much easier. I wouldn't go much longer than 24 hours before cleaning them.

Anybody else do this?

There are a couple of advantages to doing this beside handling and cleaning them.

I won't clean fish until after they have chilled and set up stiff. I put them on ice as I catch them all day and most often they are good to go when I get back home. the last few fish of the day I dispatch before putting them in the cooler.

If you let the fish "stiffen up" before cleaning, rigor has set in through the flesh. That is a very good thing for the texture of the fish. the flesh will be noticeably more flakey and taste better.

Slime?, since no LMB ever see my livewell, I don't have that issue barf , but yes we throw crappie into a cooler of ice as we catch them. Depending on when we get in, determines if another bag gets thrown on top, for cleaning the next day. Makes for easier cleaning

I guess there is no accounting for taste , but I think
a green trash fish smells much worse than crappie.

GTF smell just a little better than shad to me.

They taste good , smile

I need to try this...I'm usually racing to get unloaded and clean the fish when I get home from the lake. I paddle a long way to catch fish sometimes so having time for a nap and then cleaning in the evening would be really nice.

I keep them alive in the live well and will not clean a fish that has been dead for over a few minutes. Makes a huge difference in the taste. If your having problems with odors in the live well i would suggest a good rinsing when you get home and may a couple of charcoal brickets.
