First of all there's no beach.when you walk down the stairs your standing on the rocks.I just cast off from there. The pier's been closed since Ike so you have no choice except to wade fish there or stand on the rocks.I saw a guy wade fishing on Tuesday on the east side of the pier.He came in with 3 reds and 2 black drum.Yesterday I got there around 3 and stayed about an hour.the current was pulling to hard and i didn't want to use my spider weight so i went down to one of the jettys.I was catching whiting and hardheads for a few hours.not to exciting but caught about 20 all together.Around 8 I went back to the pier for one more try and caught 2 hardheads.I'll be going back down tomorrow morning.I just hope the water clears up some.

So the "groins" are rock outcroppings?

" groins " are rock outcroppings ? "

What they are talking about are small man made `jetty`s` that run out from the beach there in Galveston.

Don`t worry you can`t miss them, if surfs up they are a little tough to fish. By going out on a groin this gets you closer to a `gut`, so a long cast from the beach or wading is not necessary.

Pier fishing will require some stout line or a drop net to bring fish up to the pier where you are standing. Many unprepared people (landlubbers) lose fish because of this.

Every trip down there will require adjustment due to conditions; a ` bent pole pattern' is sometimes required. By this i mean if you see someones pole bent ( catching a fish ) then copy what they are doing . Good luck,.....there are fish there. !

Here are a couple of pictures of some rock groins. The ones here are east of 61st St. I think there are about 3 or 4 groins built like these pictures indicate, that are accessible to handicapped fishermen.

I'm always catch and release, except for cut bait.

I will be heading to Galveston this August. Does the information presented here still hold true for that time of year?

Yes.
It may even be better then. Calmer winds and surf, warm water temps, and clearer water during this time of year unless there's a tropical system affecting things.

go about half way out on the rocks , set one pole with cut bait , prefer whiting myself and the other with life or dead shrimp on bottom . I have caught lots of reds and drum off the rocks there.
