Headed there in June or July. Any suggestions of guides and/or accomodations would be appreciated.

My favorite trout river in the U.S.! We booked our guide at Abe's Motel and Fly Shop in Navajo Dam, 505-632-2194. We had our RV, so we just booked a slot, but there is a motel. Uh, Navajo Dam is not upscale by any means. Our guide's name was Robert (don't know the last name), younger guy, who was one of the hardest working, knowledgeable guides we have ever had. He really worked the drift boat well. This beauty was caught on a size 12 Elk Hair Caddis in the pool across from the ET rock.

Accommodations run from basic (Abe's) to upscale (Soaring Eagle Lodge). We usually stay at Enchanted Hideaway Lodge. If I need a guide, I usually book thru Duranglers in Durango, CO. The last time I fished there it was with Mark Engler from Duranglers. If you are willing to wade, I would highly recommend Steve Meyers of Duranglers. He has fished the river for decades, has written a couple of books about fishing the river, and is one of the nicest and smartest guys you will ever fish with.

Abe,s is a cheap place to stay. They have kitches in rooms. Small flies was the choice, But while in the Kiddy Pool, there was a guy throwing big streamers catching alot of trout. Also, the water is COLD. It could be 100degs. and your legs could be freezing.Trout every where. A little #20 gray with white foam wing, caught alot in foam line.

Fishergirl, my wife and I went to Galaxy last night . Cool I think it's a fun, inexpensive place. One fall after a movie had been showing for a bit, several of us arrived, brought beach chairs, sleeping bags, charcoal, a fire ring, bought drinks, raw hot dog weenies from the concession stand, roasted them over the fire, hung the speakers around our spot, and sat around the fire watching the movies. For $15.00, it was one of the best evenings spent with friends.

We drove from Midlothian, Ferris, S-45. Was looking for water under all the bridges, woundering if there is fish.Never been to Palmer. I have caught some rather small Longears at the creek that runs under I-45, west side of freeway, just south of that religious area. Right now, at the I-45 service road, that creek is seriously logged-jammed and has a ton of pollen coating the top, but that creek is the same one that runs by Rockett Cafe, and it is really clear through there and along Hi-View Farms on Rutherford Road, and I have caught many Sunfish species wading along its waters. On my way home from work, today, I fished South Prong Creek @ I-35, where they are doing the construction. I could only spend about 20 minutes fishing, so I just fished the part between US 77 and I-35 (in a dress and sandals much to the construction crews hoots), but I caught a Dollar Sunfish and a Green Sunfish, and had a small White Bass chase my fly up to the shore. Took some pictures, but my camera's Macro feature blurred the fish and focused the background, ugh! You might give those a try.

Back on thread. Abe's is cheap (think $55/night) and has some good guides. I've fished with Chris, owner of FishHeads. They have expanded and have a fly shop, lodge and guides. They are Orvis endorsed (at least the guide part is). I've thought about the places MickFly mentioned, but they generally exceed my budget projections. I was there 4 years ago and stayed up in the State Park above the Dam. It can get HOT in July and August. I'd think September might be good...cooling down, but still great fishing. On your first day, GET A GUIDE. They can show you parts of the River you'll never find on your own...and wade, not drift. Boats have to put in at the Texas Hole and drift down river. There is a LOT of River above the Texas Hole that fishes great.
