Scout! Calling Scout! What the h=e=double=toothpicks is that toothy critter? I don't want to be in the same body of water it inhabits.

scout300: Lucky. A Smack on the fly... sweet. Surf or Jetties? Must be a fight. No luck to it! They are super fun. Scout (mostly) and myself (when I can get away from work) have been catching them from the jetties fairly consistently. As for fight, I hooked one that went 28" off the end of Port A South jetty last summer that I was pretty sure was a king at first. Feisty for sure. Only problem with them is they tend to die really easily - gotta take extra care if you're C&R them.

They are actually very easy to catch, definitely the most consistent fish to catch from the jetty and the bigger ones do put up quite the fight. I also caught a couple of grouper that day, the pictures are on my facebook page or I can post them up here.
Like I've posted before if you guys come down here let me know and I'll try to help find some fish for you. I enjoy meeting members from the board.

What size rod do y'all recommend to jetty fish and chase smacks with?

6wt-10wt and intermediate lin depending on the wind and the size of the smacks. No matter the rod make sure you have the over 200yds of backing, everything hits clousers out there so you never know if you'll jump a tarpon or hook a jack.

We'll generally use the lightest tackle we think we can get away with for the targeted quarry, but you can instantly find yourself undergunned if jacks roll through or a king decides your feathers look edible. I'd recommend a fast 8 for versatility, and a reel with plenty of backing and a smooth drag.
