Had a nice redear spot picked out last week that had lots of fish on beds.
Went back a couple of days ago and the same area was growing moss with not a fish to be seen.
Have they taken care of business and moved on or have they moved to another location? Basically, should they still be on their beds?
Thanks!

The sunfish spawn should just be starting about now and heating up as the weeks pass. They have probably moved off for some reason or moved to another location.

This full moon should be the big one for lakes and rivers. The fish probably sensed something happening. Maybe the water level is dropping or rising, an influx of warm or cold water, or some other environment change. They most likely are bedding in nearby deeper water. Look for semi-hard bottom close by and holes in weedbeds.

I'm up and going now, thanks. In saw several beds in Waller, Shoal, and Barton Springs creeks over the past week.

Heron, the cool weather ran them off the beds at Caddo last week. I'm sure they will be back soon.

Was out yesterday on the Creek here and pulled in mostly warmouth and green sunfish. Other than small gills and a few longear there weren't many other fish I saw.
Everyone has to believe in something - I believe I'll go fishing!

Several possibilities such as:
1) The eggs hatched and the fry moved along. The males will stay guarding the nests several days but move on when the fry move on.
2) the eggs had not yet been deposited and something e.g. weather change caused the fish to move back to deeper water.
Like bluegills they will spawn throughout the spring/summer and full moon periods are the best times to get 'em.

I don't think theyve started bedding at lake Athens; went to all my old bed locations and nary a fish on a bed; since the water is low they may be spawning in deeper water but I havent found any-p-

what area's are best for locating them right now...sandy point in creek or main lake...lilly pads, ditches and the backs of creeks? Do they spawn in the same area's as the bass did?

I'm wondering if the snake that got my stringer the other day may have sent them deeper or elsewhere. She seems to be fairly regular to that location.
And thanks for all the feedback. I'm glad to hear we're at the beginning and not the end. I've been after them with wet fly patterns and it's fun watching the fly bounce around then suddenly take off.
Still looking for a contest worthy redear but haven't seen any since becoming interested in the contest.

Heron, the cool weather ran them off the beds at Caddo last week. I'm sure they will be back soon. I'm finding the same thing at almost all of the lakes I fish. The rain and cool weather has moved them in and out off and on the beds. They will be back.

to locate brim beds i put my polarized glasses on, raise my outboard about half way and idle around the shallows looking for them; make a mental note of where they are and come back later and fish them. When the water is low they will bed deeper than if we've had a lot of rain, but they bed the same place every year; maybe not the same spot but very close by it-p-

Still seeing some Gills on beds. I have not seen as many Rios but still a few sitting on beds as well. Having some luck on rock/gravel bottom.
