Do you check the Fly Fishing section periodically, but never post?

Do you have unanswered questions about the gear, fish, or people of our fine sport?

Do you find yourself wishing that you could share your angling escapades with complete strangers over an internet connection?

If you've answered yes to any or all of these questions, you may be a lurker. Fear not, this is your thread.

Here are a few questions to get you started:
Who are you?
Do you fly fish or would you like to?
In what part of our great state do you reside?

Post it up folks, don't be shy. If they let me hang around in here, it can't be that exclusive of a club.

Hi My name is Baddlegg, and I am a lurker.
I dont always lurk, I do post, but I do lurk alot.
It has been 10 min since I last lurked.
I live in Deep east Tejas. Between Tyler and Longview. I attempt to fly fish, it probably resembles more of a three stooges episode more than actually fishing.

Got plenty of lures but dad gum fish just wont cooperate. Wannabe fisherman in training.

I primarily lurk but have been know to post from time to time. I live in Katy but I'm currently working in Afghanistan. I'll be home in exactly 2 weeks and will be loading up the family for a week in South Padre!! I've got a nice place rented and have acquired the services of a guide for a full day of fly fishing for those big Texas Redfish! The rest of the time I will be fishing from the boat slip on the canal, wading the bay, hitting the surf, and drinking beer!

I CAN'T WAIT!! 5 months in the desert will make you a little stir crazy!

I just got my second fly rod and reel yesterday. My first was when I lived in Anchorage, but I was in the Army and never actually had time to go fish. I am going up to Lake of the Woods in Ontario in a few days and wanted to get some of the Pike on a fly setup.

Yesterday evening I caught my first fish on my new setup: a small blue catfish. I was practicing casting from a dock on Lake Lewisville and was having trouble. I got my phone out to watch a few tutorial videos and as I was watching one the little guy got my fly and started running.

I dont know whether it is a good sign that I caught a fish on my first outing, or that it's a bad sign that its a catfish.

NEITHER! Anytime you catch a fish on a fly rod is a good sign. I think one of the first fish I caught on the fly was a catfish. The very first fish I caught was a Bluegill or maybe a Sunfish. Those little buggers are a blast on a fly rod.

It was fun, I wasn't even trying to catch fish, just practice casting (very difficult for me).

It's a common theme on here, but I can tell you from personal experience that time spent with a Certified Casting Instructor is money and hours well invested.

Good stuff, folks. Keep those lurking comments and stories coming.

I went to Rainy Lake (not far from LOTW) last June & caught smallmouth & pike. Absolutely the best time I ever had with a fly rod, I didnt catch any huge pike (about 7 lb @ 30 " my best), but even the "hammer handles" are vicious lil' monsters. I had a bunch of specialty flies ready to go, but caught all my fish on poppers & divers.

I have been lurking all week, feels strange to post outside of Tejas.

It's more than the catfish would do.

I live in the DFW area and as you can tell by my post record, I don't make that many entries... in fact, this is #1 for me. Definitely a lurker on this site since I got into fly fishing a few years ago. As I began to try and learn this completely different way of fishing (in my world), I would search the internet for tips and information. I was constantly directed to this site.

I have learned a tremendous amount from you guys, from different flies to use to places to fish... Never really felt like I had anything to add the the topics, but hey, now that I have actually made a post, who knows...

Still have lots to learn, but I am officially addicted to the sport, the peace that comes from it, and the beauty I see every time I am on the water. We are all blessed to be able to fish...

Like someone mentioned earlier, the best way to pick up casting is to find an instructor. They can stand to the side and watch you cast and pick up flaws that you may not see. You can make instant corrections on the spot and they will have you shooting line 50-75ft in no time!
Another thing I have found that was helpful for me, (especially when it comes to tying flies), is to search for videos on Youtube. There are hundreds of videos there for casting and tying and that also makes it a lot easier to pick up some cool little patterns.
Also, when I am unable to fish, (like now since I'm stuck in the middle of a giant fricking desert!!!), I go to Youtube and watch all the videos of guys catching Reds, Bonefish, and Tarpon. Sometimes though that just pi$$es me off!! smile

My name is Tom. I post occationally and fly fish often, usually for sunfish. I'm a student, so I'm in College Station in the Spring and Fall and in Richardson during the summers and winters. I'll be headed up to Ketchikan, Alaska this July to work at a salmon hatchery and plan on taking my 5 weight to try and catch some trout on my day off.

Hi Folks,
I've still been having trouble with my health, things seem to be leveling out some. The wife and I are moving to Frisco, TX soon.
I'm looking for easy access, I'll be using ultralight fly equipment. I guess I should state my needs better. I'm looking for information about fishing spots in Frisco that are easy access. Thanks for your help!
