Shimano and Abu are completely vamping up their rod selections. They have been asking anglers opinions on what they want in a complete set of fishing rods. This year will be the year for shimano rods.

Way to bring this topic back from the dead. Funny though, I was a Revo man until I bought my first Shimano. Zillions are still the kings IMO.
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

after working on zillions, still not a big fan. I would buy 10 used CU200s before I buy one brand new zillion

Right. Shimano's are the most durable,of,reels and take care of their customers....but....I prefer my Steez reels.

So back to your original question, I think people like Shimano's becuase they make a good product that lasts forever with minimum maintenance.
I agree. I've used most low to mid dollar reels to start and then made the decision to purchase a better engineered product. Shimano MG 50's, Chronarch 100's and Calai's are great reels. I even have a few old green Curado's that still perform well.

I don't know exactly why but I have found that my Shimanos will get better (smoother) after being used a few months.

Idk maybe one day I'll buy one. Never personally fished with one, just went off specs vs other brands. Just makes me feel skiddish dumping out $150+ on a reel that has less "technology" than most reels in the same price range. Theres an old saying in the engineering community, divide by 2, or multiply by 2 when dealing with management, divide by 4, or multiply by 4 when dealing with sales. Sales and marketing are going to use specs on bearing counts, and so forth to sell, and market reels. Towit, reel specs are most often just a means to promote reels. What counts at the lake, stream, etc. is reel performance. Just because a reel has 100 ball-bearings doesnt mean that those ball-bearings are GOOD bearings. 100 times poop is still poop. The reason that Shimano has such a solid following is because their reels are well made, Not that Shimano hasnt laid some eggs but year in, and year out Shimano reels preform well, and preform well with minimal fuss, and muss. Shimano has earned a solid reputation over the last two decades or so by producing quality reels that preform at the shore, and on the water in the hands of regular anglers. This is not to say that other brands have not produced some excellent reels, just that theyve not been as consistent in producing solid long lasting reels that just flat work in the way that Shimano has. One last point. You dont see many pros on the Shimano staff, nor for that matter the Daiwa staff. Other brands have tons of pros on staff. Ask yourself why that is.... TFP

I wasn't starting this thread for a flame war. If you want to call me a moron for asking a question, then go hang yourself with fishing line. I simply asked because of the technology advances and why everyone boasts about them. Not to offend anyone that uses them in any way, shape or form. As most of you stated, I should try one before asking this question, and my response is that I would not fork over several hundred dollars without some kind of knowing of what I'm buying. I apologize for the brash way that I asked the question if I offended anyone. 210, Your question was an honest one. You ask your question, and stated your background. It was obvious to me at least that youre trying to get a better handle on the ins and outs of fishing gear. Dont let short fuses frustrate you from asking honest questions. Folks, lets keep thing friendly, and helpful here in the Boats & Equipment threads. The Bunker in the OT is the place to go for harder-edged postings. Id point out that 210s question is just the sort of question that the Rod & Reel sections is about. We old salts ought to be offering sage wisdom and advice to those that havent wet quite so many hooks as we. Finally, and this is important, the human hand has 26 bones in it. Thus, the variations of the human hand is quite considerable. This is why some reels that feel totally great in my hand feels very awkward in the hands of some others, and vis-versa. Ive got huge palms, and relatively short fingers, if you have small palms and long fingers then its pretty easy to see that what fits my hand well may not fit your hand worth a hoot, etc.. TFP

I was at work today and a guy looked over my desk and saw my schematic for a shimano reel Im working on at home. He goes oh youre working on a Schwin? No, I said, Im working on reels. He goes "oh I didnt know Schwin made reels". "they dont, its a shimano reel" then it continued on to one of the most confusing conversations Ive had in a while. Now that is funny! I think I am going to start a thread about Schwin reels. I bet it goes for pages and pages. LOL Hey! Schwinn Reels are great! I mean, if they werent then Captain Kangaroo would not be advertising them right? TFP

I have (2) shimanos Chronarch and Citica, a pflueger patriarch, 3 bps pro qualifiers, 1 revo stx, 1 browing, a H20, etc. several others. The Revo is awesome, but I would buy 2 more pro qualifiers than buy another 200.00 reel. Durable awesome reel.

I guess no one caught the fact that I made the switch to the JDM. Love my Daiwas and my Shimanos.
