[quote=JIM SR.]And I don't see the big depreciation in boats, the ones I see for sale that are 3-4 years old are still plenty expensive.
Boats in general have a huge depreciation the first year; the first minute you drive it off the lot for that matter. I don't care what brand it is you can count on 20-25% depreciation the first year. Anyone that tells you different is either dreaming or uninformed.
I have financed them every way you can imagine. Leasing is okay if you never want to pay the boat off which is my case. If you get a good enough price on a boat deal upfront then leasing may be good to do. Done it many times. In order to not be upside down on it at the end of your lease you have to predict what the value will be at the end of the lease term. This is where a good crystal ball comes in handy or at least lots of experience. LOL
If you get on a good pro-staff deal you may get as much as 25% off of a new rig in exchange for various promotional time commitments you will have to fulfill. Since 25% is a good number to use as the first years depreciation you can do a short term lease on the rig and sell it when it is one or two years old and be fine. Done this about 15 times over the years.
With regard to the pros, many of the Elite Bassmaster guys get one or even two rigs per year as their fee for promoting their sponsors products. Then it is up to them to sell the rigs and turn them into cash which is then written off as income. This is the upper echelon only.
Another level of sponsorship for the pros that may fish full time but haven't won a Classic or AOY is for their sponsors to provide a boat at no charge to them for one year. At the end of that year they turn it in and get a new rig. The pro has to provide insurance and fuel.
Yet another level, and this is the one most common, is for the boat company to sell a rig to a pro for a discounted price. This is typically ran through a participating dealer. This pro-staff deal will most likely be 20-25% off. The pro is responsible for securing his own financing, whatever type it may be.
