What is your opinion for the ideal drop shot rig?

Unless you are fishing vertical or vertical structure you dont need a spinning outfit. Any small profile reel, whether a baitcaster or a spinning reel will do fine. As for a rod...any medium action fast to moderately fast tipped rod no longer then 7 ft will get it done. I use a Shimano Core 50mg and a Falcon Cara AOY rod with mine and do just fine. They key is to be able to use light line and get the bait down to the fish with a natural fall. It takes some practice with a baitcaster but can be done. I caught my fair share of bass this weekend on a drop shot using my set up.

Remember....key is to have the hook perpendicular to the line to make the rig work right. Light line is the key and small 1/0 or 2/0 hooks only... and remember...fish it SLOW! just twitch it!
