I will be going to freeport next week. Will fish Friday and Saturday. This will be my first time to fish the ocean or the gulf I guess. Any sugestions or comments on what to take and what to probably expect and what will probably be catching. Have a friend that has a friend that owns the boat and lives there. He fishes all the time but is not a guide. Never met him and would like to hear yawls comments on what to expect. He is furnishing everything as for as tackle and rods and bait ect..

Hey, unless you are paying him to take you out....believe me, just go along for the ride, relax and anything you catch will just be a bonus...I like those kind of trips. And if you have a really good trip, I guarantee you will be hooked and want to go down there every weekend...believe it!!

bobaloo1,
Thanks that is what I was wanting to hear. The trip is not costing me a dime. It's a B-Day present and even driving her car down. Can't wait to try this type fishing. I guess it'll be a little diffiernt from fishing for kitty's and crappie.

I hope you have a good one...even though I have over 40 years fishing experience, I learn something new every time out, and if it is something I don't do regularly I do everything I'm told to do and try to learn new techniques, etc. Even though the coast and lakes are two different worlds, fishing is still fishing and you will see a lot of similar stuff - you won't be lost or as uneducated as you might think. I think if you go with no expectations except to have a great B-day you will probably load the boat!!

Any advice on gear or clothing? Everything needed to fish is furnished.

I grew up at the coast (now in Austin) and I don't think I ever went fishing (coast) that I didn't get something wet - especially my feet. I would have an extra pair of sneakers, socks and jeans just in case. If you wade fish any, well, that part is obvious. You never did say if you are bay or gulf fishing...big difference there. Just take clothing that you can layer..it'll probably get hot in the pm unless a front is blowing through. It's almost time for the flounder run to start...bull reds are still around I'm sure...this is just about the best time of the year for big ones of all types. I only used waders during the really cold months after the water cooled a lot!! Since you are going out with someone that knows what he's doing, I wouldn't worry about gear or anything...he will know. If it were me and I had a favorite med/heavy action bass rod with a baitcaster and about 15# line...it would go along too...if you know what I mean...these are perfect for bay fishing.

I played hookie from school yesterday and made the drive out to freeport from houston for some fishing. I did pretty well yesterday caught reds, specs, and some mackeral. not bad for only a few hours since i had to leave early. Me and my friend used med action castaway and allstar rods with 15lbs, had no problems. I'm planning to go back out there this Weekend so good luck.

My friend talked to the captain Wed and were set to go. Said they were catching lots of reds. I don't know if this is gulf or bay fishing we will be doing. From what I understand the captain of the boat lives in freeport and stay's half divorced all the time because of fishing.

Heading out in the morning for Freeport. I'm so pumped up for this. The forcast is calling for chances of rain Fri and Sat. I assume the fishing in the gulf in the rain is just like here in the lakes. The fish are already wet so it really doesn't bother them. My biggest catch is a 7lb blue so I'm hoping to beat that both day's.

We fished Galveston the week of September 14- 21 and on the 16th we were sitting out at the end of the north jetty in rain so heavy you could hardly see anything but the bull reds were biting like crazy! The guide said that the fish like to bite during the low pressure. If the fish are biting, you tend to forget that its raining! Just be sure to take a couple changes of dry clothes. Not a bad idea to get a dry bag to keep it all in and if you are out there and get too wet you can change if and when the rain lets up.

Have a good time!

Glad you had a good time and caught some fish...imagine how it will be in a little better weather. If your next trip is soon, you might hit the flounder run! Anywho, glad you enjoyed it!!

Thanks bobaloo1,
Going to try again in a few weeks. The weather this trip was bad and there was the constant threat of it getting worse so it limited us to staying in the canals and the jetties are closed and you cant even get on it. But as you said I would - I had a blast. The next trip will be better planned out
