Im headed down there in a week and a half and was just looking for some advice on what to use to get into some bigger fish or some better fighting fish such as shark or spanish macks or some other kind of fish I could catch in the surf. What to use etc. I will only be fishing in the day time and have pretty heavy set up . 10-12 ft rods braided line 40lb test. So I can get out there a ways I have heavy duty rod holders too

Catch some baitfish with a cast net or smaller rod and use that for bait. You could also stop by one of the local bait shops and tell them what you want to do. Not only will they tell you what to use for bait, but may give you info on where to fish. I have not been down there in a while, but have seen a lot of complaints about sea weed. Good luck.

The seaweed was horrible Thursday and Friday but the wind shifted mid day Friday to the North and the seas got a lot calmer, almost flat. We waded to the third sandbar near Isla del Sol and caught specks, slot reds and spanish mack Saturday afternoon past the breakers. I will say this, you have to be in the surf or you can't get past the seaweed. The first two cuts are pulverizing the seaweed like an angry washing machine. Mounds and mounds of it. My recommendation is to not intentionally shark fish if you are going to be chest deep in the surf. There is no where to go if you get a mean one on. Just my thoughts. The wading was lot easier later in the weekend. I have friction burns on the backs of my legs from all the seaweed.

The seaweed has been terrible for the past few weeks, but as PayneFish said, the North wind this past weekend flattened things out. Seaweed was still pretty heavy and is thick on the sand too. A lot of people had a lot of luck this past weekend by wading out. They were bringing in a lot of trout and smacks. Some of the trout have been pretty nice too. The reds and jacks have been good too. Shrimp under popping corks seem to be doing the best, although some fish have been taken on artificials. Unless you have a kayak, I don't recommend shark fishing because of the seaweed. If you have a kayak though and a high spot to put your rods to clear the weed, you should be ok. Blacktips are being caught at the piers in regular numbers so...
Hope this helps and good luck.

How far under the popping cork? 2-3 feet? Circle hooks?

Tx a word of advice from an old pier rat . The deep end of pier does not always produce the best fishing . I caught so many 25-50 lbs fish in 2 feet of water it would make u think I was a magician .
Gawd I hope I catch a fish so big I will not have to lie again >>>> My phone # 713 517 9096
