Hi everyone.
I wanted to know if anyone here knows if by wearing waders, can you still feel the sting of stingrays or jellyfish? I know its a dumb question but i would really like to know.
Thanks, Lady_Red

jelly fish, no, sting rays, definatly yes! the only thing i have ever heard that will stop a stingray are those hard plastic snake guards used for quail hunting in south texas. they fit around your shin. shuffle your feet when you wade, and don't worry about them if your in an oyster bed. i saw one stingray get caught on the BAY side of the texas city dike that went 188 pounds.

Hey Lady Red, you wont feel the jelly fish because the tentacles and toxin wont pentrate the waders. But the sting ray uses a barb in its tail much like a spear head that will penetrate your waders and your leg. They cause intense pain, and long healing process and some scaring. They have totally different defense mechanisms. ------------------ TexSafaris Outdoor Adventures

I purchased a pair of the kevlar stingray boots and that provides me fair degree of protection. Kevlar is the stuff they use on bullet-proof vests. The boots are a little heavy and cumbersome, not to mention expensive ($100). Think what it would cost if you had to go to the hospital. They go up to my knee and that's reasonably good because a stingray is not likely to strike above the ankle, unless you fell into the water. Then, your whole body would be susceptable.
Carlos I live in Austin, but my heart's in the bay!

Lady_Red,
I bought Sting Ray Guardz at Academy. The price was quite reasonable, less than $40 I think. I haven't used them so I really can't speak for the efficacy.
