Has anyone used one of the one man pontoon boats before?

Can I use them on Ray Roberts or some the the city lakes?

Thanks.

I had one. Wind resistance is pretty high. I got blown all over the place. If you get one you will need a trolling motor and of course that means registration. Bigger lakes would only work with lighter winds.
I like kayaks a whole lot better. Kayaks handle winds better, do not require a motor and are easier to load and unload.

I am a big guy and it's hard to get in and out of a yak.

It will spend more time on a pond than a place like RR, unless there is some small cove I can get to with my truck to launch from.

I had one and hated it! I could not wait to get rid of it and get a yak. I used it MAYBE 4 times over the 2yrs I had it. Save your money and get a yak.

There are places to launch a kayak on RR. I use to work at a place that MFG those small pontoon boats. They are totally different then a kayak.

I just got a Hobie Outback. It is extremely stable.
I'm 6'@250 and the outback has plenty room to spare.

The pontoon boat is going to be bulky, and a lot harder to get around then the outback. You also won't have to get it registered because of having a motor. And you wont have the up keep on a motor. And the kayak is a lot quieter with out a noisy motor behind you.

If you want to try out the outback give me a call some time. I can meet you at Ray Roberts and let you take it for a spin.

I am going to use an S-10 pickup to carry it around and I think with few 2x2's I can build a little platform that it can sit on.
I don't think they are very heavy to drag around are they?

I could put a little trolling motor on it when I need to go long distances with it (like RR) and just use the paddles on ponds.

I have an S10 and that it what I had when I had the Pontoon boat. You don't need any equipment to drop it in the water and pull it up out of the water from any standard boat ramp. Just back down till your wheels are in the water and your set.
Max range of a pontoon boat with a trolling motor is about the same or less than I can do with my Mirage drive. And I never have to worry about my battery running down.
Getting into and out an SOT is easier than getting into and out of a pontoon boat if your doing it right.

I like my fishing craft like I like my women. That being said...I don't care for anything I got to blow-up before playtime. Walk the kayak out to mid shin depth, back up to your boat and put your hands down on the sides. Then just hold the boat against the back of your legs and sit down. Slowly swing your legs over one at a time. Reverse this process to exit without looking silly. Pontoons will limit you on storage, wont stand up against hooks/jagged submeged metal sign posts/pokey objects, and are all but useless in a light breeze. I have seen some awfully big fells catch fish from kayaks. There are alot of protected shallow water launch points around you, many on larger lakes wear a pontoon may feel a bit...small eek

We must be talking about a different type of pontoon boat. The ones I am talking about run about $4000.

If I got a yak I would have to build a rack for it to sit on above my truck, I wouldn't want it to stick out the back.

I have never used a yak so maybe you guys are right.

I got run up to the local pond to catch the evening bite, I will be back.

Thanks for the info

Oh. got cha. smile
I like the looks of those too. I know absolutely nothing about them though. They do look like they would be very stable.

They wouldn't be much pleasure to paddle a long distance. But if you are going to stay in small ponds, that wouldn't matter.
You could always stick a trolling motor on there. But you would have to start getting it registered then.

There are other "paddle" kayaks that are good for bigger people smile like me.
They are a lot cheaper then the outback too.

I just liked the peddle drive, so I dug a little deeper in the pocket book this time.
