I watched someone using a Zebco 202 on the jetty at Port Aransas, he got spooled by what I'm guessing was a red.

Had just graduated from college and moved to Houston. Never fished salt before. 2nd trip out I found out why people fish saltwater! Was at Surfside jetty fishing with very small squares of cut mullet. Had a 6-1/2 foot bass rod with a low-profile abu baitcaster on it. Thought I got hung in an errant jetty rock, till it started moving. After couple minutes I saw a fish back between wave breaks. It was a 4-1/2 foot black tip. He almost spooled that little reel twice, blistered my thumb on the first run! Drag on that reel never worked quite the same again. Also promptly went out and bough some proper inshore saltwater gear!
It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming. -John Steinbeck

My friend and I were in my boat at San Luis Pass and my friend throws out a huge piece of cut mullet on a big hook on a Penn 209 full of 20 lb mono. Well he gets a run and hooks it and almost strips the reel before I can get the anchor up and boat going the same direction as the fish and 5 hours later it's getting dark and we don't have lights on the boat and we're about 3 miles up in the bay so I have to tell him to break it off. At the end we were in 12 ft of water and he had a 6 ft steel leader and we never even saw the swivel come out of the water. It never quit moving so I doubt it was a stingray, and it never moved fast again after the first big run. Shark of some kind ???
