2004 Yamaha 75 4 stroke. New to me boat that runs great above idle but does not want to idle at all. Is this a certified tech. repair or something I could try with some expert advice? thanks for any and all help.

Is is carb or efi I think that motor wasn't a efi in 04 yet of so it will probably need the carbs gone throughout those 4 strokes have very tiny idle passages in the carb that clog up Very easy

Honestly I dont know which one it is. My newest engine before this one is a 1978 model. I just purchased this boat last Sunday. This thing looks like something from an alien movie under the cowling. Where do I get a good service manual for this engine? Thanks for your help.

The number is F75TLRC. Does that tell if it's carbed? Where can I get the manual that the mechanics use for this engine? thanks

Check the yamaha website, you can look at a pdf file and can print them as well or least used to be able to.

That motor is carbed and they are very difficult to work on. Have you ever heard of a starter primer on a carb? This motor has them as I found out 3 weeks ago. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/parts/home.aspx

First thing I would do is adjust the idle screws. It might be easy enough to do from the lake. Just get out to an area where you can anchor up and test the motor. Each carb will have a little flathead screw on the body (accessible without having to remove much more than the engine cowl/cover). Back them off a tiny bit at a time (like 1/8 turn) and check your idle. It's trial-and-error and might take some time, but once you hit the sweet spot, you'll know it.
If you have any sort of "wrench-head" mentality, I would also try and pull the carbs and clean them yourself (you can't always trust previous owners). As stated above, there is a little jet that can get clogged easily by sand or debris from the gas tank. You can run a very thin wire through it to clean it out, shoot in some carb cleaner, and then blow it out with compressed air (optional).

nax, thanks for the info. i will try that. it's not much fun trying to load and unload when she won't idle.

Update: I stopped by the parts store on the way home yesterday and bought some Sea Foam. I only had about five gallons in the tank so I put 3/4 of the can into it and shook it around. I put the muffs on, hit the choke, and she fired right up without any elevated throttle. I let it run about 5 minutes and turned it off. I then waited a few minutes and tried it without any choke or throttle and it started right up. Nax there is an idle adjustment screw on the bottom carb that controls all of the carbs on this engine.

Good deal BigLar. A single screw is much easier than 3 individual ones. I have dual-carb's on mine and have to adjust two screws. It's not always easy to get them both just right. Anyway, the SeaFoam probably de-carbed some stuff for you (which is overall good; I run a can of SeaFoam with every other tank. The motor is a 1984 and the carbs and what I can see inside the block look practically brand new). That said, it may not have been enough, if you didn't adjust the idle screw. The load (back pressure) on the motor while running on muffs isn't always the same as it is in the lake so there is a chance that you will still have the problem out on the lake. I had the same experience, so believe me. My motor would run all day long at all speeds while on the muffs. However, when I launched and fired it up, my idle problem, while not as bad as before, still existed. I had to back the idle screws off another 1/8 turn while on the lake, but then I was golden. Did you mess with the idle screw at all or did you just run Seafoam? If you did adjust it, then try to launch at the lake and see if you hit that sweet spot. I'd be willing to bet you did (or are real close, like I was). Heck, either way I would say launch the boat! Just choose a nice day and a place where you can beach the boat easily if you need to. Take the screwdriver with you and adjust that screw until you're up and running. If you're able to run on the muffs like you say, then you're either there or real close. Nice job with the progress. Sure beats putting it in the shop, huh!

Take the screwdriver with you and adjust that screw until you're up and running. I would take TWO screw drivers, if you are near water...

I dropped an entire box of sockets in the lake last weekend. Luckily the box was still closed and I was in about 3 foot of water. I was able to feel it with my foot and retrieve it without knocking it open.
